If Outlook prompts that it cannot recognize the character set of an email, and that there is an attachment called message.txt, you can try the following procedures to recover the email.

Procedures:

  1. Save the attachment message.txt to the hard disk and rename it to message.eml.
  2. Double-click message.eml to open it from the location where you save it (you will notice that the icon of the file has become an envelope). Note that the system will open message.eml automatically using "Windows Live Mail".
  3. Most of the time, you will be able to view the email properly now. Sometimes, however, you may find the message contains a lot of strange characters. In that case, try to change the encoding (View -> Encoding) to Chinese Simplified GB2312 or other encoding language.

Note: If you want to transfer the email from "Windows Live Mail" to the Outlook Inbox, click File -> Move to Folder from the menu. Then the email message will be transferred to your Outlook account. (In order to do so, you need to setup Outlook Express to receive your EdUHK email. For details, please refer to our online setup guide Using Windows Live Mail)
