FAQ: How to activate MS Windows or MS Office at home?

If you borrow the Windows 10 Enterprise or Office 2016/2019 setup disc from IT Help Desk, you need to activate the Windows system / Office for use, and the activation period is 180 days. If you do not activate the system, it will be locked after the grace period of 30 days.

    • Windows 10 Activation procedures:

    To activate Windows at home, you must make VPN connection to the campus network (Please visit VPN Setup Procedure for details).


    Windows 10 (Base on version 1803)
    • Click Start, then choose Settings

    • You will notice that there is a link at the bottom said the "Windows isn't activated." Please click on the link to activate it.

    • If successful, you will get the following screen.

    Note: You need to activate Windows or Office every 180 days; otherwise the system will fall back to trial mode and it will be locked after 30 days. To extend the activation period for another 180 days, you simply make VPN connection to the campus network, and extension will be done automatically.     Office 2016/2019 Activation procedures:

    To activate the Office suite at home, you must make VPN connection to the campus network (Please visit VPN Setup Procedure for details).

    You can check the activation status by:

    Office 2019/2016
    • Open MS Word 2019/2016
    • Click File -> Accounts
    • You will see the activation status on the right hand side.

    • Office will automatically activate the product once your computer connects to the campus network.
