OCIO manages central servers, e.g. email, ftp, news, internet, intranet, UNIX, servers for personal web pages, file servers, network print servers and other central servers. Departments are welcome to use them as these servers are maintained and supported by OCIO and their reliability are closely monitored. For special needs that cannot addressed by central, departments can set up their own servers. The followings are some reminders for department:

  • Most of the IP address are assigned dynamically through DHCP. Departmental server could apply for a fixed IP address and DNS name.
  • Department should ensure the servers are properly managed against hackers and virus attack.
  • Servers should refrain from generating a lot of broadcast traffics to the network which might interfere the normal operation of the campus network.
  • Assign an administrator to manage the server.
  • Ensure that proper software license are acquired to cover the server.

OCIO provides departmental private cloud service for the hosting of departmental servers and websites on Virtual Machine (VM). The virtual servers provided are functionally similar to a physical server. For details, please visit Private Cloud Service.
