EdUHK Receives Generous Donation from FHKA in Support of Elite Athletes’ Dual Pathway

The Education University of Hong Kong (EdUHK) received a generous donation of HK$2 million from the Friends of Hong Kong Association (FHKA) today (2 December) in support of the University’s Elite Athlete Friendly University (EAFU) Fund, a scheme established to promote the dual career pathway for local athletes and to foster the sustainable development of local sports.

The donation ceremony was attended by FHKA President Dr Henry Tang Ying-yen, Vice-Presidents Professor Anthony Wu Ting-yuk and Mr Ng Leung-ho, Vice-President and Secretary Dr Tam Kam-kau, Vice-President Dr Eliza Chan Ching-har, Executive Director Mr Lu Fu; and EdUHK Council members and staff. EdUHK President Professor Stephen Cheung Yan-leung gave a presentation on the University’s latest development, before joining Council Chairman Dr David Wong Yau-kar in receiving the donation cheque.

Today’s ceremony also saw the appointment of four elite athletes as the EAFU Ambassadors, namely squash player Leo Au Chun-ming, windsurfer Cheng Kwok-fai; and rowers Chiu Hin-chun and Lee Ka-man. This is in addition to last year’s appointment of former World Champion cyclist Wong Kam-po and Hong Kong karate team member Lee Chun-ho as EAFU Ambassadors, who are expected to become role models, committed to promoting local athletes’ whole-person development.

The four newly appointed Ambassadors are not only medal winners, but are also passionate about learning. They all graduated this year from either the Master of Social Sciences in Sports Coaching and Management programme or the Bachelor of Health Education (Honours) programme, with an outstanding academic performance, apart from their sports achievements.

Extending his sincere gratitude to FHKA, EdUHK Council Chairman Dr Wong said, “With the historic success of Hong Kong athletes at the Tokyo Olympics and the Government's recent efforts in developing the sports industry, I believe more talents will be attracted to pursue careers in sport. Thanks to the generous support from FHKA, the University will be able to further promote lifelong learning and the diversified development of local athletes.”

FHKA President Dr Tang said, “The success of Hong Kong athletes does not come about by chance. It is indeed the result of our athletes and their coaches’ hard work, the Government’s long-term investment, and local universities’ research and development. As an important yardstick of social progress and development, the sporting success of our country embodies our overall national strength and social civility; it is also an essential manifestation of the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation.”

The University’s Department of Health and Physical Education has attached great importance to the development of teaching and research in the field of sports science; 58% of its research was recognised as “world leading” or “internationally excellent” in the recent Research Assessment Exercise 2020 conducted by the University Grants Committee. To address future societal needs, EdUHK will launch the Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Sports Science and Coaching programme in the 2022/23 academic year to equip students pursuing sports careers with knowledge in sports administration, sports science and sports medicine.
