Groundbreaking Ceremony for New Academic Building Marks Milestone in EdUHK Campus Development

The Education University of Hong Kong (EdUHK) held a groundbreaking ceremony for the construction of the New Academic Building today (28 September), marking the beginning of a major development project on its Tai Po campus.

Expected to be completed in three years, the eight-storey New Academic Building will provide purpose-built facilities to cater for the growing trend of technology-enhanced pedagogical approaches. It will have a net operating floor area of 7,600 square metres, housing a 400-seat multi-functional auditorium, classrooms and lecture theatres with multimedia equipment, laboratories and ancillary research space, as well as learning commons.

Officiating at the event were Council Chairman Dr David Wong Yau-kar and President Professor Stephen Cheung Yan-leung. They were joined by Deputy Council Chairman Dr Terence Chan Ho-wah, Treasurer Ms Imma Ling Kit-sum, Vice President (Academic) and Provost Professor John Lee Chi-kin, Vice President (Research and Development) Professor Chetwyn Chan Che-hin, Vice President (Administration) Ms Sarah Wong Man-yee; as well as LegCo members cum alumni Hon Lilian Kwok Ling-lai and Hon Benson Luk Hon-man. There was a live broadcast of the event for staff and students.

In his opening remarks, Dr Wong extended his gratitude to all relevant parties for making the project possible. “The New Academic Building can be seen as a timely impetus to fuel the growth of EdUHK, which is a young and thriving university, ready to make greater contributions to the school sector and the wider community. It will become another landmark of the campus, bringing together faculty members and students engaged in different learning and research activities,” he said.

Professor Cheung said, “Over the years, we have grown in leaps and bounds in terms of programme offerings, research capacity and student population. The New Academic Building is not just about space expansion. We shall make use of the latest educational technology to support interactive teaching and learning, research, knowledge transfer, and scholarly activities, especially in the context of STEM and AI education.”

The New Academic Building is the University’s first major capital project since the inauguration of its Tai Po campus in 1997. It will provide additional learning and research space for the growing student population and research activities, especially in the new emerging disciplines. EdUHK has also identified big data analytics, neuroscience, psychology and sports science and coaching as new focus areas for research and development in line with its Education-plus approach. The new building will enable EdUHK to strengthen its role in driving educational innovation, while providing synergy with its existing research arms.
