EdUHK Appoints Professor John Lee Chi-kin as Next President

The Council of The Education University of Hong Kong (EdUHK) approved today (23 September) the appointment of Professor John Lee Chi-kin, currently Vice President (Academic) and Provost, and Chair Professor of Curriculum and Instruction, as the University’s next President, effective 1 September 2023.

 

In announcing the new appointment, EdUHK Council Chairman Dr David Wong Yau-kar said, “Professor Lee is a passionate educator and renowned scholar of high international standing. He is considered the best person to lead the University to excel in its next phase of development, given his track record at EdUHK as well as his vision, strategies and plans for the way forward. 

 

 “The Council has every confidence in his commitment to strengthening EdUHK’s role as a leading centre of excellence in education, bolstering research, enhancing the quality of teacher education and fostering collaboration with partners in the Greater Bay Area and other parts of the world, among other strategic priorities.” 

 

In accepting the appointment, Professor Lee said, “It is with great honour and humility that I am entrusted with the responsibility of being the next President of EdUHK. I am greatly indebted to the Council for placing its confidence in me. My thanks go to all members of the University community for their invaluable contribution to the impressive growth of EdUHK over the years. I am fortunate to be able to follow in the footsteps of Professor Stephen Cheung Yan-leung and his predecessors, who have collectively made EdUHK what it is today.” 

 

Professor Lee said he will continue to strengthen the University’s role as a hub of education excellence, as well as a thought-leader in education and related disciplines, while enhancing the quality of teacher education.

 

Congratulating on Professor Lee’s appointment, Professor Cheung said, “John is a committed educator and highly respected scholar with whom I have worked closely for almost a decade. I wish him all the best in his new role in leading the University to scale new heights.”

 

Professor Lee graduated from The University of Hong Kong, and received a master’s degree from the University of Oxford. He later obtained a master’s and PhD, as well as a Postgraduate Diploma in Education at The Chinese University of Hong Kong. His research interests focus on curriculum and instruction, geographical and environmental education, and school improvement. Dedicated to fostering academic and cultural exchange, Professor Lee is also the UNESCO Chair in Regional Education Development and Lifelong Learning, and Research Fellow for the Southeast Asian Ministers of Education Organization (SEAMEO).
