EdUHK Receives Donation from Mr Li Ka-shing to Promote AI Literacy

The Education University of Hong Kong (EdUHK) launched the third phase of its Artificial Intelligence Literacy Programme today (19 October). The scope of the programme has been expanded to cover primary and secondary teachers, parents, and administrative staff in small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).

Since 2020, Mr Li Ka-shing has donated over HK$10 million to EdUHK to promote artificial intelligence (AI) literacy. To date, over 700 university and senior secondary students have benefitted from the initiative.

Organised by the University’s newly established ‘Artificial Intelligence and Digital Competency Education Centre’ (AIDCEC), the 10-week programme strives to equip the general public with the necessary AI skills to enhance the efficacy of learning and teaching, and workplace productivity.

Comprising 60 hours of face-to-face lessons, tutorials, self-learning exercises and presentations, the programme covers the basic concepts of machine and deep learning, and provides tips to generate effective questions for inquiry and prompts. It will conclude with a presentation session, requiring participants to develop a work plan to apply AI in the classroom or workplace. The programme is expected to benefit over 800 teachers, parents, administrative staff in SMEs, and senior secondary students.

EdUHK President Professor John Lee Chi-Kin said, “We are deeply thankful for Mr Li’s staunch support rendered for our pioneering work in AI education over the years. We are committed to promoting the responsible use of new technologies, and the establishment of the new AIDCEC will enable us to guide the entire community to embrace new technology in the AI era.”

Mr Li Ka-shing said, "Fostering innovation is the power to thrive in the future, and I am glad that three years ago, EdUHK took concrete steps to implement the AI Literacy Program. It is crucial to promote AI awareness and education, as AI is essential for the future. Expanding the program to train professionals in AI application, especially among administrators in SMEs, is now more imperative."

Professor Kong Siu-cheung, Director of the AIDCEC at EdUHK, said, “AI tools can not only enhance teaching effectiveness, but also narrow the learning gaps among different learners, which helps promote individual learning. Therefore, teachers, parents and students should harness the power of AI to address pedagogical challenges and develop independent thinking.”

As part of its dedication to promoting the application of AI and technological innovation, EdUHK established the ‘Artificial Intelligence and Digital Literacy Education Centre’ in August 2023 to help individuals from the education sector and beyond to access knowledge and skills related to AI. The Centre will also spearhead research in related fields, driving technological innovation for the betterment of society.
