2023 Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Integrated Education Forum

The Education University of Hong Kong (EdUHK) has joined hands with The Salvation Army today (12 October) to hold the ‘2023 Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Inclusive Education Forum’. Titled ‘Unity and Cooperation, Inclusive Integration: A New Vision for Special Education in Guangdong, Hong Kong, and Macao’, the two-day forum — featuring seminars and thematic speeches — provides practitioners with an opportunity to exchange insights into topics relating to inclusive education, namely enhancement of infrastructure and teacher capacity, curriculum development and pedagogical innovation.

The forum is supported by the Education Department of Guangdong Province, the Education Bureau of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government, and the Education and Youth Development Bureau of the Macao Special Administrative Region Government. It has attracted over 500 academic experts, principals, frontline educators, special educational needs coordinators and parents from nearly 100 schools in Guangdong, Hong Kong, and Macao.

In welcoming the forum participants, EdUHK President Professor John Lee Chi-Kin said that the University had placed great emphasis in promoting research and development in the field of inclusive education. He added that this was evident in the incorporation of the Institute of Special Needs and Inclusive Education, in its newly established Academy for Educational Development and Innovation.

Professor Lee, who is a member of the Committee of Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, has recently submitted a proposal to the national body on the topic.

“Inclusive education emphasises caring, acceptance and equality in education. Through this forum, we hope to provide a platform for professionals in Guangdong, Hong Kong, and Macao to enhance understanding among the three communities through sharing experiences and mutual learning,” he said.

Regional Secretary for The Salvation Army Hong Kong and Macao, Major Minny Chan said, “Integrated education has always been an important component of the education field. It affects the growth and development of every student, and it is also a project that The Salvation Army has always been concerned about. We hope that every student with special learning needs can receive equal and quality education.”

The forum featured three keynote speeches and nine seminars on different topics, including a speech by Professor Kenneth Sin Kuen-fung, Executive Director of the Institute of Special Needs and Inclusive Education at EdUHK on ‘Journey to the Far: A Retrospective and Prospect of Inclusive Education in Hong Kong’. He explained the current situation and projected future directions for the development of inclusive education in Hong Kong.
