EDB and EdUHK Co-organise Quiz Competition on Chinese History and Culture

The Education University of Hong Kong (EdUHK) and the Education Bureau (EDB) co-organised the finals and award ceremony of the 2021/22 Territory-wide Junior Secondary Quiz Competition on Chinese History and Culture, on 11 June 2022. The competition aims to promote and raise enthusiasm of junior secondary school students in Hong Kong to learn Chinese history and culture. By competing against each other, students can learn and encourage one another. Through the competition, students can build a strong moral character, broaden their horizons, and continue to pass on Chinese culture.

The competition was open to all Secondary 1 to Secondary 3 students in Hong Kong. It attracted about 5,500 students from 71 schools to participate. The top 12 schools with the highest total scores in the preliminary round qualified for the finals. From these, the top four competed for the championship.

Dr Ip Sum-ming, Chief Curriculum Development Officer of the Personal, Social and Humanities Education Section, Curriculum Development Institute at EDB, delivered a speech after the finals. He said, “Because of the enthusiastic support and encouragement of all principals and teachers in this room, motivating students to participate in various activities that promote the learning of Chinese history and culture, it was possible to hold this competition even under the constraints of the pandemic. I sincerely hope that through the joint efforts of EDB and the school sector, we can enhance students’ understanding and interest in the history and culture of our own country, so as to respect, appreciate and care about the historical development and cultural heritage of China. I also hope that the participating students will continue to pursue further study in Chinese history and culture, which will certainly benefit them throughout their lives.”

Dr Fanny Li Yuen-mei, Acting Head of the Department of Literature and Cultural Studies (LCS) at EdUHK, said, “Chinese history and culture are valuable resources for developing a sense of belonging to the country and people, promoting personal growth, and independent thinking. The competition today showcased students’ interest in Chinese history and culture, and we hope to continue to create a strong learning atmosphere through diversified activities that allow students to appreciate Chinese tradition and its rich culture.”
