Hong Kong & Macao SAR Youth: Identity, Citizenship Education and Civic Participation 2016 Conference

Over a hundred scholars from Hong Kong, mainland China, Macao, Taiwan, Japan, Singapore and Nigeria gathered at The Education University of Hong Kong (EdUHK) today (17 December) for the Hong Kong & Macao SAR Youth: Identity, Citizenship Education and Civic Participation 2016 Conference, co-organised by the Department of Social Sciences, Centre for Governance and Citizenship and Resource Centre for Interdisciplinary and Liberal Studies at EdUHK.

Officiating at the opening ceremony, Professor Kerry Kennedy, Advisor (Academic Development) at EdUHK, highlighted that there will be no place for passive citizens in the future. “As a hub of education research and teacher training in Hong Kong and also the Asia-Pacific region, EdUHK is always concerned with youth development. Schools need to create citizens who know, who think, who act, who reflect and who care, for this will help to underwrite the future and create the kind of societies in which our children and grandchildren can flourish”, he said.

The conference provided a platform for discussing questions about youth identity, citizenship education and civic engagement, as well as identifying the policy implications for the respective governments and societies. Speakers included experts in politics, sociology and citizenship education, as well as frontline teachers and social movement leaders of the new generation in Hong Kong and Macao.
