Over 100 international Chinese language experts, scholars and teachers gathered today (24 June) at The Education University of Hong Kong (EdUHK) for the Third International Conference on Teaching Chinese as a Second Language, organised by the Department of Chinese Language Studies and Faculty of Humanities at EdUHK, the School of Chinese at the University of Hong Kong and Swarthmore College in the United States. The conference also celebrated the launch of an international journal.

Entitled the International Journal of Chinese Language Education, the bilingual journal is jointly published by the Department of Chinese Language Studies at EdUHK, the Chinese Language Program at Columbia University and Chung Hwa Book Co. (H.K.) Ltd. Among the editors-in-chief are Professor John Lee Chi-kin, Vice President (Academic) of EdUHK, Professor Liu Lening, Professor at the Department of East Asian Languages and Cultures cum Director of the Chinese Language Program at Columbia University, and Professor Si Chung-mou, Head of the Department of Chinese Language Studies at EdUHK. The team, along with a number of academic advisors and regional editorial members, exchanged ideas and thoughts on the mission, goals, editorial process and future development of the Journal. An appeal was also made to experts and scholars to submit papers.

Professor Si pointed out that it is the University’s wish to consolidate the knowledge exchange amongst global Chinese education experts and explore the latest developments in Chinese language teaching through establishing such an international platform, which he believed will have a far-reaching impact. “EdUHK has been striving toward excellence in teaching and research in the areas of Chinese linguistics, language education and teaching Chinese as a second language. We will continue to develop related fields in order to achieve a world-leading and internationally influential standard.”

He added that the conference provided an academic platform for Chinese teaching experts and colleagues from around the world to exchange ideas, explore the current situation, innovation and development of Chinese teaching at the international level and discuss related issues on Chinese language teaching and International Baccalaureate/Advanced Placement courses.

In addition to keynote speeches delivered by Professor Jin Hong-gang, Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Humanities, University of Macau, and Professor Liu from Columbia University, the conference also featured 17 sessions with 69 papers presented and over 100 participants in total. Experts and scholars from the United States, Korea, Japan, Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam, Mainland China, Taiwan, Macau and Hong Kong also participated in the event.
