EdUHK Promotes Mathematics Concept Development in Digital Classrooms

The Department of Mathematics and Information Technology (MIT) at The Education University of Hong Kong (EdUHK) conducted the second dissemination seminar for QEF Project 2013/0541 entitled “Building a Community of Practice (CoP) for Mathematics Teachers: Using Cognitive Tools and Communication Platforms Inside and Outside Digital Classrooms for Developing Mathematics Concept of Learners" today (24 February). The project’s objective is to build a community of practice (CoP) with on-going practice and professional sharing to help mathematics teachers create ideal digital classrooms for seamless learning, thus facilitating students to apply e-learning applications and communication platforms to construct mathematical knowledge.

 

Led by Professor Kong Siu-cheung, Professor at MIT and Director of the Centre for Learning, Teaching and Technology at EdUHK, the project is supported by 15 collaborating schools, including the Education University of Hong Kong Jockey Club Primary School, La Salle Primary School, Jordan Valley St. Joseph’s Catholic Primary School (JVSJ), PLK Dr. Jimmy Wong Chi-Ho (Tin Sum Valley) Primary School (PLKWCH), Tai Kok Tsui Catholic Primary School, Hong Kong and Macau Lutheran Church Primary School (HKMLCPS), Baptist Rainbow Primary School (RAINBOW), HHCKLA Buddhist Wong Cho Sum School, Alliance Primary School Whampoa, Lam Tsuen Public Wong Fook Luen Memorial School, Mong Wong Far Yok Memorial Primary School (CCCMWFYS), Marymount Primary School, Ho Shun Primary School (Sponsored by Sik Sik Yuen), Fresh Fish Traders' School and Salesian School.

 

The project is establishing a CoP to support mathematics teachers in adopting the 5E (Engagement-Exploration-Explanation-Evaluation-Extension) inquiry-based learning model and mathematics visualisation learning tools to help students develop mathematics concepts and procedural knowledge. It aims to promote a shift from the teacher-centred paradigm to a learner-centred paradigm for the development of mathematical knowledge.

 

At the seminar, project leader Professor Kong Siu-cheung reported the major outcomes of the project’s second year. Reporting the school-based pedagogical designs for, teaching experiences of and tips on promoting the “CoP for Mathematics Teachers” were representatives of five collaborating schools, including Mr Lau Lee of RAINBOW, Mr Wong Sin-ming and Ms Pang Man-ting of HKMLCPS, Mr Ku Yuk-wah of CCCMWFYS, Ms Ho Nga-man of JVSJ and Ms Chung Yuk-to of PLKWCH.

 

Following a Q&A session, Professor Kong led a discussion of the relationship between inquiry-based learning and digital learning, effective ways of promoting a digital learning culture and how such knowledge may help teachers to promote students’ self-directed learning.

 

The project is expected to be completed in May 2017. The project team will then make use of the lesson plans and teaching materials of the collaborating schools to create a cloud-based repository, which will be accessible to all local primary schools.
