The MAGHE programme familiarises students with historical developments in education during the last two centuries in East Asia and beyond. It thereby provides a global perspective on key issues in the history of education. These include the implementation of national school systems, the growth of university education, the increasing role of international organisations (such as UNESCO and OECD), and the more recent rise of standardised testing and international rankings.

MAGHE is an interdisciplinary programme and brings together courses in global history, the history of education and comparative education. It is geared towards a deeper understanding of the present state of education and will provide students with a grounded perspective on the future. The programme aims at cultivating graduates with an awareness of the historical processes that forged and continue to shape modern education systems in East Asia and worldwide, and thereby equips students with professionally relevant academic knowledge. It can also serve as a stepping stone for doctoral studies.

In short, the MAGHE programme enables students to:

  • understand globalisation through the history of education;
  • analyse historical developments in education worldwide;
  • critically assess current education systems and imagine the future of education; and
  • develop the ability to engage in educational reform and assist in leadership roles in educational contexts; or to succeed in further postgraduate research

MAGHE is a young and fresh programme that started in the academic year 2022-2023. Since then, MAGHE has energised the careers of its graduates in education and beyond. MAGHE graduates are now spread all over China and even in the world.
MAGHE scores extremely high in student satisfaction. Our students are happy with their learning experience. They consider the programme as clearly conducive to their professional development.
What do MAGHE students typically do then after graduation? Most of our graduates return to the Mainland of China. They find jobs as History, Chinese, English and other teachers in public secondary schools. Some of our graduates have succeeded in becoming teachers at prestigious international schools in Shenzhen and other cities. Some have even joined teacher training institutions where they oversee the education of the next generation of teachers.
While most return to the Mainland of China, a substantial portion of our graduates uses the programme as a pathway to stay in Hong Kong. The majority of those staying in Hong Kong embark on a teaching career. They find jobs as a teaching assistant in either a public or an international school. Some decide to further study for a Postgraduate Diploma in Education (PGDE) in order to become fully certified teachers in Hong Kong.
Those who are envisioning an academic career often work as research assistants before applying to doctoral programmes. At least two of our graduates have successfully joined the PhD programme at EdUHK. Some pursue further education overseas.
Other graduates go into a variety of careers, including finance, insurance, publishing and so on.
