Teaching Award Scheme 2022/2023
Teaching Award Scheme aims to give recognition to faculty members who are committed to teaching. The award will be in the form of individual or group awards, and are conferred at the Faculty level. The award consists of a certificate and a monetary award of HK$25,000 to be used by the awardee solely for educational activities. Awardees’ names will be permanently displayed at the main entrance of the EdUHK Library.
Full-time academic/teaching staff with a minimum of 2 years of teaching experience in the university at the time of nomination

Dr Lee is a dedicated teacher with exemplary teaching performance. His excellence is evidenced by his consistently high SET scores over the years and the “Award for Excellent FE Supervision” he received in 2021. His strong leadership in developing and promoting the new BA in English Studies and Digital Communication programme (BA[ESDC]) is most impressive. Apart from teaching, Dr Lee has been contributing to a wide range of learning and teaching projects. He has completed a faculty knowledge transfer project with another professor and created a manual on acoustic phonetics for speech-language therapists in mainland China. He ran a workshop for 930 professionals from across the country.
Dr Liao is an innovative teacher who has developed his own pedagogical model, “SHAPE”: Strategy instruction, Holistic care, Assessment for learning, Participation, and E-learning. He actively integrates IT components into his teaching. Apart from that, Dr Liao has participated in a wide range of projects related to e-learning, and has been working on various research projects related to Chinese language learning and teaching, including a GRF project and an ECS project. He is now serving as the Associate Head (Research) of CHL. His research-informed teaching has made a positive impact in his department.
Ms Lee is a passionate and experienced teacher with very good teaching performance, as evidenced by her consistently high SET scores. Besides her day-to-day teaching at the University, she has worked closely with practitioners in local schools to strength the connections between the academics and practitioners. For example, she led a Teaching Development Grants Project on an ebook programme designed to support struggling readers in local primary schools. She also led a Faculty Special Project where she introduced digital storytelling to local secondary schools to explore ways to enhance English language learning with the use of multimodal texts. As the Programme Leader of Professional Development Programmes (English), Ms Lee also made great contribution to the professional development of local English language teachers, leading the development of new PDP courses, which focused on meeting local English teachers’ current and practical needs.
Dr Cheung has an inspiring teaching philosophy: “Students are Achievers”. She shows great enthusiasm in her teaching and has taught a variety of courses at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels. She has been extensively engaged in curriculum development, especially in General Education. Dr Cheung keeps developing her expertise in blended learning and e-learning, implementing new pedagogies through adopting innovative approaches. She has also utilised several e-learning teaching resources in her class to facilitate discussions, such as Polling, Padlet, VR tour, and Edpuzzle.
Dr Choi is a committed and experienced teacher who has good teaching performance. She has shown strong leadership through her roles as the IELTS coordinator of the English Enhancement Programmes (EEP) team in CLE and ASLLC manager. Dr Choi adopts an interactive approach in her teaching and always cares about the learning needs of students. In addition to teaching, Dr Choi has been taking part in various learning and teaching projects to promote a dynamic pedagogical model of asynchronous and synchronous virtual teaching and learning to enrich students’ virtual learning experiences.
Dr Zhang is an enthusiastic teacher of Chinese language education. She has an innovative teaching philosophy “CARE” - “Creative”, “Adaptive”, “Reflective” and “Effective”. Her great efforts in teaching have made a very positive impact on students’ learning. Currently, Dr Zhang is the Programme Leader of the BA(TCSL) programme, steering the curriculum review and development of the programme.
Apart from teaching, Dr Zhang actively involves in many learning and teaching related projects. She has been making good use of e-learning resources to enhance blended learning. The educational mobile app “Classical Chinese Poems Sing Along” developed by Dr Zhang received lots of positive social responses. To promote academic exchange, Dr Zhang also took up the role of the key organiser of three teaching-related symposium/workshop/conference in 2019.
Ms Chan is a caring and experienced teacher with exemplary teaching performance. She is strong at developing close connections with her students and engaging them in an agile learning environment. Also, Ms Chan actively integrates IT components with her teaching. Her effective teaching is evidenced by the excellent result of SET and favourable feedback from her students and peers.
Ms Chan has taken up multiple leadership and service roles. She has been serving as the Departmental Coordinator of the English Language Teaching Minor, the Field Experience Coordinator and Immersion Coordinator of the PDGE(P) and PGDE(S) programmes. In terms of knowledge transfer, Ms Chan has actively participated in internal and external funded projects, including CRAC projects, TDG projects and QEF projects.
Dr Kataoka is a passionate teacher who shows great abilities in integrating research with teaching in practice. The Cantonese self-learning website developed by Dr Kataoka has greatly benefited not only students in the EdUHK but also the community as a whole. The Cantonese textbook co-authored by Dr Kataoka has also been chosen as the textbook in many Cantonese programmes in overseas universities such as New York University and the University of British Columbia.
Apart from the above, the multi-lingual and multi-cultural background of Dr Kataoka allows him to contribute significantly to the development of modern language courses. He has been in charge of promoting foreign language learning at the University. Under his leadership, six blended learning courses in Japanese, French and Korean were developed.
Dr Zhou is a dedicated and caring teacher who is willing to offer timely support and pastoral care to her students. She is good at adopting innovative teaching methods and technologies to cater for students’ different learning needs. Her excellent teaching performance is evidenced by her consistently high SET scores over the years.
In terms of knowledge transfer, Dr Zhou developed various videos under her teaching development projects (“E-learning Package 2021” and “Understanding Media and Popular Culture through Online Self-made Mini Videos 2019-20”). The large number of views recorded for these videos served as a great indicator of her success. Currently, Dr Zhou is the Programme Leader of the MACSLE programme, deeply involving in the curriculum development of the programme.
Dr Ma is a passionate and caring teacher with exemplary teaching performance. She is very strong at adopting various innovative technologies in her teaching. She has been taking a leading role in integrating mobile technologies with teaching in various courses. Besides, Dr Ma has demonstrated strong leadership in scholarship work. Her project team of “Education Linguistics 2.0 – The Use of Corpora in Language Teaching” won the Silver Medal at the 47th International Exhibition of Inventions in Geneva in 2019.
Dr Wong is an experienced and all-round educator in Chinese modern literature and creative writing. His SET scores have been consistently one of the highest among the peers. Apart from teaching, Dr Wong has been actively participating in various Chinese language education development projects and publications. He was the founder of the literary club “Xin Chuan” in 1998. Over the years, the club has nurtured many talented young writers and literature educators, and produced many prize-winners in local writing competitions. Dr Wong’s devotion and achievements are highly appreciated.
Dr Liu is good at motivating students to learn and making her classes attractive to students. She is a dedicated teacher who uses a variety of teaching strategies to enhance student learning. Dr Liu’s scholarship in the field of teaching is equally impressive. She has published three monographs on Chinese language education in recent years and is keen on sharing her teaching experience with colleagues in different large scale seminars and workshops.
Dr Pang is an effective teacher who has consistently attained high SET scores and received positive feedback from students. His good rapport with students has helped increase student participation and foster a positive learning environment. Dr Pang has also engaged in research related activities proactively and is capable of using research outputs to inform his teaching.
Dr Tse is a passionate and innovative teacher who consistently receives excellent feedback from his students. Over the years, Dr Tse has been actively participating in the development of Chinese Enhancement Programme and Teaching Development Grant projects. He shows great abilities in integrating research and teaching in practice. To pursue excellence in teaching, Dr Tse constantly renews himself as a professional on his quest to provide students with the highest quality of education possible.
Ms Keung is an experienced and effective Putonghua and Cantonese teacher. Her exemplary teaching can be proven by the excellent feedback from her students. Ms Keung is currently the coordinator of the Putonghua Enhancement Programme, and has been the subject leader in curriculum development supporting the implementation of the University’s language policy. Her outstanding achievements have demonstrated all essential qualities of a teaching model.
Ms Wang is held in high esteem by her students as an expert of Teaching Chinese as a Second Language. She is currently the Field Experience Coordinator of the MATCIL programme. She has successfully established strong connection with a number of overseas and local international schools. Besides, Ms Wang has been deeply involved in IB development. She organised an IB Concepts and TCSL Summer Workshop in 2018, and co-organised a Summer Workshop with Princeton University in USA in 2019.
Dr Wang is an experienced and dedicated teacher with exemplary teaching performance, evidenced by his consistently high SET score and excellent feedback from his students and peers. He excels at adopting various innovative methods and information technologies in his teaching to engage students in an agile learning environment. Besides teaching, Dr Wang’s significant contribution to the scholarship of teaching is equally impressive. He has actively offered various workshops, talks and sharing sessions to disseminate good teaching practices at the departmental, faculty and university levels. In terms of research that related to teaching, Dr Wang participated in more than six TDG and Central Reserve Fund projects between 2014 and 2018. He has produced over 10 high quality publications from 2015 onwards, in areas such as language education, corpus linguistics, and mobile learning. Dr Wang served as the Programme Leader of the BEd(English Language) programme and the Double Degree of BA(Language Studies) & BEd (English Language) programmes over the past few years. During the period of his leadership, Dr Wang has successfully enhanced the programme curriculum in every aspect. Started from June 2018, Dr Wang has taken up the role of the Associate Dean (Quality Assurance and Enhancement) to oversee the quality of teaching, learning and assessment, as well as the academic standard of all programmes in the FHM.
Dr Ho is an expert of Chinese Language Teaching Methodologies who has an inspiring teaching philosophy which consists of two “IN” – “inspire” and “insight”. Dr Ho is held in high esteem by his students as an experienced and innovative educator who proactively promotes blended learning that inspires and motivates students in a variety of learning contexts. In addition to teaching, Dr Ho is an active researcher who has participated in various knowledge transfer projects, through which he has successfully established a strong connection with local secondary and primary schools. His exceptional competence is further proved by his contribution to the founding of the “International Journal of Chinese Language Education” and organisation of two international conferences on Chinese Language Education in 2016 and 2017, respectively.
Ms Lin is a passionate and innovative language teacher who can always adopt learner-centered approach and technology-supported pedagogies. Her high SET scores and the favourable feedback from students have proven that her teaching has been very effective. Ms Lin’s educational leadership and management skills are excellent, especially in challenging contexts. She served as the course coordinator of five English courses for the ECE programme from 2012-14, and has taken up the coordination role of a large-scale English course for over 400 ECE students since 2014. Besides, Ms Lin plays an important role in pioneering various e-learning initiatives in CLE. She serves as the technology representative of the English team and the blended learning ambassador of CLE.
Dr Kang is a historian of Modern Hong Kong and China who has an inspiring and innovative teaching philosophy “openness” - open format, open experience and open stage. He is an affectionate and caring teacher who can always motivate students with different academic backgrounds to study history inside and outside the classroom. To cater for students’ diversified needs, Dr Kang adopts different teaching strategies, such as using “4-re” teaching methods (reconstruct, reread, reflect and research), and evidence-based approach to develop students’ critical thinking in history and pop-culture area. Besides, Dr Kang is committed to pursuing quality teaching and pedagogical innovative teaching. His exemplary performance is evidenced by his excellent SET scores and positive feedbacks from his students and colleagues.
Dr Yu is an experienced and all-rounded Chinese teacher with exemplary teaching performance, evidenced by the high SET score and excellent feedback from her students and peers. She is dedicated to use a variety of teaching strategies and innovative technology to enhance student learning, such as VBLC E-platform, Moodle, and digital classes, etc. Besides, Dr Yu is a lifelong learner who has actively participated in various teaching enhancement activities to seek continuous improvement in her teaching. Apart from teaching, Dr Yu has played an important role in pioneering the reorganization and optimization of Field Experience for the Chinese programmes in the Faculty. In terms of research, Dr Yu has successfully published four international articles and six referred journals in the past few years.
Dr Liu is an expertise in translation pedagogy and practice. She is a passionate and caring teacher who can always inspire and motivate students. To cater for students’ diversified needs, she adopts different teaching strategies, such as using a wide variety of interactive activities and real life cases; developing online learning platform; and organizing various activities and competitions to stimulate students’ interest in translation. Apart from teaching, Dr Liu has been actively participating in the development of translation courses and programmes at both undergraduate and postgraduate level. In terms of research, Dr Liu has successfully published a number of articles in international referred journals in the past few years, and she is dedicated to connect her research outputs with teaching.
Ms Chow shows strong commitment to teaching in English language. She aspires to cultivate a positive learning environment and be a good learning companion of her students. Her classes are well structured and prepared. Ms Chow adopts a student-centred approach and can always connect the course with real life context. Currently, Ms Chow is the Course Coordinator of one of the four core language enhancement courses offered to over 500 students from different disciplines, involving over ten English teachers. Also, Ms Chow is proactive at attending symposiums and is keen on sharing good practices with other colleagues.
Dr CLAPP Jeffrey Michael
Dr Clapp is a specialist in the area of Literature in English. With his belief that a teacher should cultivate students’ interest to learn rather than offer them knowledge in a conventional way, Dr Clapp has been developing the use of digital platforms and social media technologies to motivate students’ learning incentive. His high SET scores have proven his teaching strategies very effective in helping students to achieve learning outcomes. Currently, Dr Clapp serves as the Associate Head of Department of Literature and Cultural Studies, and the Associate Programme Leader of BEd(EL) programme who has been deeply involved in the revamp of Literature component of its curriculum.
Dr TAYLOR Timothy William
Dr Taylor is a charismatic and capable classroom teacher who always has his primary focus on students’ learning needs. To enhance student learning, he develops blended learning approach and integrates IT elements within his teaching. Besides, Dr Taylor has played a major leadership role in pioneering the standardization process for the assessment of Field Experience (FE) among all English programmes in the Faculty. He has also helped lead the reform of the FE practicum from Block Practice to FE Semester. With Dr Taylor’s tireless efforts, all these initiatives have been implemented successfully in the Faculty, where they also serve as good models for other BEd programmes at the University.
Dr Chen is an energetic and enthusiastic educator. She is devoted to innovative teaching that caters to the diverse needs of students in a variety of learning contexts. She is creative in instructional design and apt to connect students’ learning to real life. Dr Chen demonstrates strong ability in research‐informed teaching, scholarly research publications and enhancement of research capability through supervision of students. Dr Chen is held in high esteem by her students and colleagues as a competent and caring teacher who always implements interesting and thought‐provoking teaching strategies.
Dr Cheung has rich experience in teaching pedagogy. He can always help students develop their critical thinking and become active learners and reflective teachers. To stimulate students’ learning interest, Dr Cheung provides authentic learning contexts to students and always use examples in daily life and different assessment tasks. Exhibiting great passion and vision of education, Dr Cheung is also dedicated to integrate the research output and practical knowledge in his teaching. His teaching methods are effective, as evidenced by his consistently high SET scores in the past few years and the positive feedback received from students and colleagues alike.
Ms Lau is a dedicated Putonghua teacher highly regarded by her students. The courses she teaches are always well‐planned and highly structured with reference to the learning needs and language development of students. Her enthusiasm for Putonghua teaching and effective teaching methods have successfully engaged students in various learning activities to become active learners. Ms Lau also provides optimal and timely feedback to her students which have helped them to improve their language effectively.
Dr Leung is an experienced and effective teacher who always promotes student‐centred learning. She is well‐versed in using different pedagogical strategies to stimulate students’ learning interest. Besides, Dr Leung has outstanding performance in research related activities. She has taken a leading role in Teaching Development Grant (TDG) projects and has applied research outcomes to enhance student learning in various Chinese enhancement courses. Currently, Dr Leung is the team leader of Chinese Enhancement Programme, steering the development and implementation of the Chinese enhancement courses for all non‐Chinese major programmes.
Dr Man Ying Ling is a specialist in Daoism and Chinese culture. She is dedicated to student learning and development of motivating learning activities, which is highly appreciated by her students. Dr Man provides authentic learning experience to students through organizing a series of cultural field trips. Students are encouraged to engage in regular self-reflection on what they have learned. To stimulate students’ thinking, Dr Man is also highly recognized of her capability to connect student’s learning to real life. Besides, Dr Man is also a lifelong learner who always participates in teaching enhancement activities and makes use of feedback from students and peers to improve her own teaching.
Ms Chu Wing Ki Blanche has impressive SET scores in the past two academic years, which has demonstrated her high level of teaching competence and effectiveness. Ms Chu adopts various teaching methods to promote students’ learning and she always provides optimal and timely feedback to students. Ms Chu’s innovative teaching which integrates daily life examples and visual materials successfully engages students in the learning process. Her audio feedback to students can help them improve their writing effectively.
Dr Chuk Yim Ping Joanne exhibits a great passion for teaching. She is willing to take up the challenge of teaching new courses. Dr Chuk is held in high esteem by her students as a creative teacher who always uses interesting and effective teaching strategies, which help promote a good learning atmosphere in the classroom and enhance knowledge transmission to students.
Dr Lee Fung King Jackie has extensive experience in the planning, implementation and evaluation of English courses in the tertiary sector. She is now teaching various language system courses to undergraduate and postgraduate students. Dr Lee is an expert in English grammar teaching who can always incorporate the new understandings in her teaching. The courses she teaches are well-planned and highly structured with reference to the professional needs of students. Her teaching is also integrated with research-related theory and practical knowledge to foster an effective student learning.
Dr Kwan Che Ying is a specialist in teaching Chinese to non-Chinese students. Her research interest includes Chinese Language and Teaching, Teaching Chinese as a second Language and School based curriculum. Also, her teaching is well-organised and highly structured to cater the diverse learning needs of students. Dr Kwan is a dedicated teacher who always provides authentic learning context to her students and equips them with necessary skills to apply what they learnt in the classroom to their teaching.
Ms Kwong Oi Ping is a dedicated Chinese teacher well-received by students. The objectives of her courses and learning materials are highly relevant to the learning needs and language development of students. She always provides authentic learning contexts to students and encourages them to engage in various learning activities such as online discussion forums and individual consultation activities.
