Higher Diploma in Kindergarten Education

This programme enables students to build on their previous qualifications and experience in early childhood education. It further develops the knowledge, skills and attitudes required of competent, caring and reflective preschool educators able to construct their own philosophy of teaching and learning.

  • A wide range of teaching methods will be used, including workshops, school visits, seminars and discussions. 
  • The programme emphasizes guiding and encouraging students to actively participate in the learning process; to understand, critically evaluate and apply what is taught; and to acquire the skills for independent, lifelong learning and development. 
  • Students have the opportunity to participate in an academic exchange visit. 
  • Classes will be conducted in Tai Po Campus / Tseung Kwan O Study Centre / Satellite Study Centre as decided by the University. 

Serving teachers and educators with qualified kindergarten teacher qualification seeking further academic and professional qualification in early childhood education.

This is a 68-credit-point programme, including 4 credit points of Supervised Independent Studies and 8 credit points of Supervised Teaching and Field Work in an early childhood education setting in Hong Kong.

This programme comprises the following domains:

The medium of instruction is mainly Chinese (Cantonese). English/ Putonghua is adopted as the language of instruction for relevant courses, as appropriate.

  • This programme is offered on evening part-time basis with a 3-week summer block between the two years. 
  • It follows a course structure with on-going school-based supervised teaching, peer observation and school visit. 
  • Students are normally required to attend two to three 3-hour sessions per week from 6:30 pm to 9:30 pm. Some of the lessons may be conducted in the morning/ afternoon sessions on Saturdays. 
  • For the full-time summer block conducted after the 1st year of study, students are required to attend lessons from 9:00 am to 6:00 pm from Mondays to Saturdays. It will start from mid-July and last for 3 weeks.

      ​Some lessons including Saturday classes in morning / afternoon sessions will be conducted in Tai Po Campus. 

Graduates of the programme will:

  • have the professional qualification required of child care supervisors; and
  • be eligible to apply for the University's top-up Bachelor of Education (Early Childhood Education) Programmes.

To be eligible for admission, applicants should normally:

  • be serving principals / teachers or centre supervisors / child care workers in registered early childhood education institutions using Chinese as the medium of instruction; and
  • hold Qualified Kindergarten Teacher status or equivalent.
