Master of Teaching / Medium of Instruction: English

This programme is suitable for fresh graduates and teachers at different stages of their careers,  interested in pursuing advanced studies preparing them for future school leadership

Participants are required to complete a total of 8 courses (24 credit points) for graduation.

In 2027/28, the Master of Teaching / Medium of Instruction: English Programme will offer the following specialisation(s). Participants can choose one of the following(s):

• English Language Education

The following specialisation(s) will be offered in the new Master of Teaching / Medium of Instruction: Chinese (mainly Putonghua) Programme in 2027/28:

• 中國語言及文學的學與教 (Learning and Teaching of Chinese Language and Literature)
• 課程發展 (Curriculum Development)
• 數碼化教學 (Digital Approaches for Teaching Advancement)
• 創新教與學 (Innovative Teaching and Learning)

Applicants may apply for credit transfer for up to 9 credit points:

• Graduates from the 5-year Bachelor of Education Programmes of the EdUHK may apply for credit transfer if they have studied MTeach specialisation courses as electives in their senior years of study.
• Participants have attended courses for the Certificate of Professional Development Programmes or other Master’s degree programmes of which the standards and contents match those of the MTeach Programme’s courses, may apply for credit transfer.

Classes in the same or different semester(s) may be scheduled on weekday daytime/evenings, weekends and/or during long holidays at the Tai Po Campus / Tseung Kwan O Study Centre / North Point Study Centre / Kowloon Tong Satellite Study Centre and/or other locations as decided by the University.

The medium of instruction for all core courses and specialisation courses is English.

Tuition Fee (Provisional and subject to adjustment):

Non-local students: HK$200,000

Local students: HK$160,000

The University reserves the right to make changes to tuition fee without prior notice. Tuition fees paid are normally not refundable or transferable.

Applicants should hold a recognised bachelor’s degree and a recognised teacher’s qualification, or equivalent.

Applicants may be required to attend an interview/test.

Applicants whose entrance qualification is obtained from an institution in a non-English speaking system should normally fulfil one of the following minimum English proficiency requirements:

• Overall score of IELTS 6.0 (academic version)#; or
• TOEFL (internet-based test) # Score of 80 (for tests taken before 21 January 2026) or Score of 4.0 (for tests taken from 21 January 2026 onwards); or
• Band 6 in the College English Test (CET)# with a total score of 430; or
• Grade C or above in GCSE / GCE OL English; or
• Other equivalent qualifications.

^#The test should be taken in test centres and the result should be valid within two years. If you are applying for 2027/28 academic year, your IELTS / TOEFL / CET6 test must be obtained on or after 1 January 2025.

TOEFL Home Editions, TOEFL MyBest Score, IELTS Indicator, IELTS Online, IELTS One Skill Retake, Duolingo and National Postgraduate Entrance Examination (全國碩士 研究生招生考試) are NOT acceptable.

Applicants are strongly recommended to take the IELTS and submit their score upon application.

Remark: Please note that this programme will not lead to a Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) qualification. To acquire a QTS in Hong Kong, a person should obtain a local Teacher's Certificate or Post-graduate Diploma / Certificate in Education or equivalent qualifications.

Master of Teaching Entrance Scholarship

The Master of Teaching Entrance Scholarship (The Scholarship) was established with the following objectives: 

1. to encourage teachers’ pursuit of higher qualifications and professionalism;
2. to promote the Master of Teaching Programme (MTeach) and attract highly qualified candidates.

Eligibility Criteria

The Scholarship is available to both local and non-local full-time serving teachers who meet the following criteria:

1. Meet the admission requirements of the Master of Teaching Programme or the respective Area of Focus, if applicable.
2. Have a minimum of one year of teaching experience in local or non-local schools, including pre-primary institutions, primary, secondary, special schools, or higher education institutions, OR have relevant working experience in their chosen Area of Focus.
3. Have submitted an application for the Master of Teaching Programme through EdUHK's Online Application System and accepted the admission offer.
4. Register for the Master of Teaching Programme offered by The Education University of Hong Kong (EdUHK).
5. NOT an awardee of the Scholarship for Teachers (Pursuit of Master’s Degree Programmes) provided by the Education Bureau (EDB) or the UGC Targeted Taught Postgraduate Programmes Fellowship Scheme.

Nomination and Selection

Applicants who fulfil the criteria as stipulated in the Eligibility Criteria and interested in applying for the Scholarship must send an email to mteach@eduhk.hk on or before 31 May of each year. The email should include the following information:

1. Intention to apply for the Scholarship.
2. Attached documents:
   • CV detailing relevant qualifications or experiences;
   • One recommendation letter completed by the principal/ leader of the applicant’s current school or an academic staff member from a university; and
   • Proof of at least one year of teaching experience in local or non-local schools.

Applicants who meet the above requirements will be considered for the MTeach Entrance Scholarship.

• Students who have fulfilled the programme requirements will be conferred the degree upon the approval of the University's Academic Board. The University bears no responsibility for the evaluation of its degrees outside of Hong Kong. Students are advised to consult with the relevant authority(ies) for the prevailing rules/regulations.
• Individuals who would seek qualification certification in Chinese Mainland after graduation should contact the Chinese Service Centre for Scholarly Exchange (CSCSE) 中國(教育部) 留學服務中心 (https://www.cscse.edu.cn) for updated details.
• The certification in Chinese Mainland is an independent process from the conferral of academic qualification in Hong Kong by the University. For the avoidance of doubt, no warranties are given in respect of individual graduate's qualification certification or recognition in Chinese Mainland or any other professional qualification or license outside Hong Kong.
• CSCSE  takes a very prudent approach in evaluating each application, including the students' residential period in Hong Kong during the entire study period. When evaluating graduates' credentials, the full border entry and exit records of individual applicants will be examined.
• Students who would pursue credential recognition should be aware that short stays in Hong Kong during the study period may not fulfil the CSCSE residential requirements, leading to possible uncertainty and risks to their credential recognition.
• Students are seriously advised to consider the above when making personal plans, such as accommodation and travel plans from Hong Kong, etc. and make necessary arrangements where appropriate.
• It is the responsibility of the students to be familiar with and comply with the University regulations and guidelines governing the Taught Postgraduate Programmes. Students should refer to the Graduate School website for the General Academic Regulations and the Code of Practice for Taught Postgraduate Programmes for details.
