EdUHK Launches ‘Shine Together’ Fundraising Campaign

The Education University of Hong Kong (EdUHK) announced today (10 October) a year-long campaign to raise funds for the University’s initiatives in support of students with special educational needs (SEN). The ‘Shine Together’ campaign will begin with a 10 km charity virtual fun run, followed by a charity play, a thematic conference, and a gala dinner scheduled for next year. Celebrities Dr Elizabeth Wang Ming-chun and Mr Sammy Leung Chi-kin will serve as the Campaign Ambassadors.

The fun run will be held from 1 to 14 November 2022. Welcoming the University community, SEN students, and other members of the public, the event invites registrations from individuals, teams and corporations. Participants can complete their runs anywhere at their own pace and submit their records via the campaign website. Awards will be presented to the runners who have run the longest distance and raised the largest amount of donation, and to the team with the largest number of participants. All proceeds from the event will go to the relevant units of the University* to support SEN families.

There will be exercise workshops, in which EdUHK experts offer tips and guidance for participants. EdUHK alumnus Mr Abraham Kok Yu-hang, a former Hong Kong triathlete who founded the Hong Kong Special Needs Sports Institute, will also share his experiences in sports training as an SEN student diagnosed with dyslexia and ADHD.

Announcing the launch, EdUHK Council Chairman Dr David Wong Yau-kar said, “Special education has long been a strategic focus of EdUHK. We believe this campaign will help the University spearhead even more meaningful initiatives for the benefit of SEN students. We will continue our work with stakeholders and partners in the sector to encourage inclusive education via research, knowledge transfer and support services.”

EdUHK President Professor Stephen Cheung Yan-leung added, “The learning journey of SEN students is by no means easy. Public support, in whatever form, means so much to them and their families. Through the ‘Shine Together’ campaign, we aim to promote inclusiveness and raise public awareness of the needs of SEN students.”

Campaign Ambassador and EdUHK Honorary Doctor Dr Elizabeth Wang Ming-chun said, “Opportunities and encouragement are of the utmost importance for SEN students. With appropriate training and enough guidance, SEN students can fulfil their potential and build a healthy and fruitful life. Please join us and support SEN students!”
