The Academy for Educational Development and Innovation (AEDI) of the Education University of Hong Kong (EdUHK), along with AI, Brain and Child Research Centre (ABC-RC), received a total of HK$6 million from Hainan Chengxi Investment Co., Ltd. The funds will support educational development and innovation projects, as well as research and application in artificial intelligence, neuroscience, and child development.

The donation ceremony, held at EdUHK on 26 June, was officiated by Professor John Lee Chi-Kin, President of EdUHK and Director of AEDI. Dr Wu Guofeng, Chairman of Hainan Chengxi Investment Co., Ltd., presented a cheque of HK$3 million each to the AEDI and ABC-RC. Distinguished guests included Mr Yuan Jian, Chief Editor of Bauhinia Magazine; Dr Tom Fong Wing-ho, Vice President (Administration) of EdUHK; Professor Susanna Yeung Siu-sze, Associate Vice President (Quality Assurance) of EdUHK and Executive Co-Director of AEDI; Ms Helen Gai Huixia, Associate Vice President (Mainland Engagement and Development) and Director of Communications; and Professor Pamela Leung Pui Wan, Executive Co-Director of AEDI.

Professor John Lee Chi-Kin expressed heartfelt gratitude for the generous donation, which injects substantial resources and momentum into EdUHK's research and teaching. “EdUHK announced its Strategic Plan 2025–2031 in May, responding proactively to China’s Education Powerhouse Development Plan (2024-2035). This plan focuses on a forward-looking vision of education, emphasising innovation, sustainability and collaboration. These initiatives include strengthening the cultivation of top-tier innovative talents, enhancing the country’s strategic scientific and technological capabilities, improving the efficiency of technology transfer, and deepening comprehensive reforms in higher education,” he said. Professor John Lee Chi-Kin is confident that the collaboration will yield fruitful results.

EdUHK is Hong Kong's largest public higher education institution focused on teacher education and diverse disciplines, and also plays a leading role in integrating AI in education. Professor Susanna Yeung Siu-sze, representing AEDI and EdUHK, emphasised that this funding would help strengthen teaching facilities, support innovative research projects, and encourage more students and faculty participation in international exchanges and practical activities, enhancing EdUHK’s influence on the global education stage and contributing significantly to educational development in Hong Kong and around the world.

In his remarks, Professor Li Hui, representing the ABC-RC committed to using the donation to establish interdisciplinary laboratories, support the Springer-Nature large open-access academic journal AI, Brain and Child, and fund academic research activities at the ABC-RC Research Centre.
