EdUHK Enrols 19 Student-Athletes on Undergraduate Programmes

The Education University of Hong Kong (EdUHK) has long been committed to promoting the development of sports and is recognised as a pioneer Elite Athlete-Friendly University. This year, EdUHK has further expanded its support through the Student-Athlete Learning Support and Admission Scheme by admitting 19 athletes to undergraduate programmes. The athletes excel across various sports, including archery, rugby, rowing and the triathlon.

In welcoming the new elite athletes to EdUHK, EdUHK President Professor John Lee Chi-Kin said, ‘Athletes who demonstrate perseverance and dedication on the field serve as role models for young people. Through the “Student-Athlete Learning Support and Admission Scheme”, EdUHK offers comprehensive and caring support for student athletes. We are committed to supporting them in pursuing a sustainable dual career, enabling them to shine in sports field while excelling in their academic journey.’

EdUHK has been actively promoting sports culture in recent years through various initiatives. These include conferring an Honorary Professorship on Professor Shen Jinkang, former head coach of the Hong Kong cycling team; co-hosting the ‘National Glory - Exhibition on the Spirit of the China Women's Volleyball Team’ with the Tianjin University of Sport; launching the ‘EdUHK Ping Pong @ School Education Programme’ led by Miss Lee Ho-ching, 2020 Olympic bronze medallist in the women's table tennis team event, in collaboration with an experienced coaching team and the EdUHK student team; and launching the ‘EdUHK Martial Arts @ School Education Programme’ led by Miss Chen Suijin, 13-time World Champion, Asian Games Bronze Medallist, in collaboration with an experienced coaching team. The University has also encouraged students and teachers’ participation in the 2025 Hong Kong Marathon.

Since 2010, EdUHK has admitted over 200 student athletes to various programmes, particularly the Bachelor of Health Education (Honours) programme, and, in 2018, pledged to be an ‘Elite Athlete Friendly University’. In 2014, EdUHK was the first University Grants Committee (UGC)-funded institution to sign a collaborative agreement with the Hong Kong Sports Institute. In 2021 and 2022, EdUHK signed the Memorandum of Understanding with the Sports Federation & Olympic Committee of Hong Kong, China and The Hong Kong Jockey Club, implementing special admission mechanisms to provide opportunities for serving retired athletes, as well as jockeys, to further their studies. With the launch of the Student-Athlete Learning Support and Admission Scheme by the UGC in 2022, EdUHK has further enhanced special admission schemes and learning support for our student-athletes.
