EdUHK’s Research on Well-being and Success for All: Mapping the Pathways of Engagement with School and Society among Immigrant, Minority and Mainstream Students in Hong Kong

You or your representatives are cordially invited to cover a press conference to be held next Tuesday (7 June) announcing the findings of a recent study concerning the spiritual health and engagement with school and society among immigrant, minority and mainstream students in Hong Kong.

The study, under the leadership of Dr Celeste Yuet-mui Yuen, Associate Professor of the Department of Education Policy and Leadership (EPL) at The Education University of Hong Kong (EdUHK), concluded the empirical findings of a General Research Fund project on examining the correlation between spiritual health and engagement with school and society of Chinese immigrant (CIS) and cross-boundary students (CBS) with reference to the Hong Kong Mainstream Chinese Students (HKMCS).

This study was conducted with a sample size of over 14,000 students from 30 secondary schools. The findings revealed that all student groups rated below average in the area of “spirituality” within spiritual health. Surprisingly, with regard to school engagement, HKMCS rated significantly lower across the areas of parental care, peer support, teachers’ care and personal efforts compared with CIS and CBS. With regard to societal/civic engagement, HKMCS also reported lower levels in the areas of civic attitude and the concept of good citizenship than CIS and CBS.

Speaking at the press conference will be Dr Celeste Yuen, Principal Investigator and Associate Professor of EPL and Co-Investigators Dr Timothy Yuen, Assistant Professor of EPL, and Professor Alan Cheung, the Faculty of Education, The Chinese University of Hong Kong.
