EdUHK Signs Memorandum of Understanding with Kazakhstan National School of Physics and Mathematics
Exploring New Model of Educational Collaboration along the Belt and Road
The Education University of Hong Kong (EdUHK) and the National School of Physics and Mathematics (NSPM), Kazakhstan’s leading elite school, held a virtual signing ceremony for the memorandum of understanding (MoU) on 14 April 2026. This marks EdUHK's first formal partnership with a secondary school in the Belt and Road region, representing a significant breakthrough in the University's student recruitment network in Central Asia. The partnership aims to attract outstanding students from Kazakhstan to pursue undergraduate studies at EdUHK and to explore collaboration with the primary and secondary education sector in Kazakhstan, thereby fostering educational exchange and collaboration between Hong Kong and Kazakhstan.
Professor May Cheng May-hung, Vice President (Academic) of EdUHK, and Mr Meirbek Meirlan Yedigeruly, Principal of NSPM (Almaty branch), signed the MoU on behalf of the two institutions. EdUHK representatives included Dr Deng Wenjing, Acting Head of the Department of Science and Environmental Studies (SES); Professor Keith Ho Wing-kei; Dr Alpha Ling Man-ho, Acting Head of the Department of Mathematics and Information Technology (MIT); and Dr Edith Leung Wai-yee, Senior Assistant Registrar (Admissions and Planning) of the Registry. NSPM representatives included Ms Aubakirova Gulnur Gabduvna, Deputy Principal for Scientific and Methodological Work; Mr Toktasbayev Beibarys Yeralievich, Deputy Principal for Academic Affairs, Mr Amantai Bayanbek Amantaiuly, Head of the Computer Science Department and Ms Amangeldina Aigerim Sanatkyzy, School Counsellor.
In her opening remarks, Professor Cheng highlighted the NSPM’s excellence in international academic competitions and EdUHK's strong expertise in education. She expressed confidence in the prospects of the partnership and emphasised that EdUHK’s commitment to providing quality development opportunities for Kazakh students and teachers, while promoting educational collaboration between Hong Kong and Kazakhstan. Principal Meirbek Meirlan stated that NSPM greatly values the partnership with EdUHK. He noted the potential to create more international study opportunities for his students and to introduce Hong Kong's teacher training expertise to raise educational standards at his school and across Kazakhstan.
Following the signing ceremony, the two institutions held in-depth discussions on future collaboration. Recognising the STEM talents of NSPM students, EdUHK representatives introduced relevant academic departments, including SES and MIT, and outlined international student admissions and scholarship arrangements. The two institutions are exploring an admissions collaboration mechanism, including sharing admission information and supporting scholarship applications, to create more opportunities for Kazakh students to study in Hong Kong. Both sides also discussed potential collaboration in teacher training, including professional development courses and further study opportunities for frontline teachers in Kazakhstan, as well as international internship opportunities for Hong Kong students.

This partnership will enhance the competitiveness of EdUHK and Hong Kong's institutions as a premier higher education destination in Central Asia, demonstrating EdUHK's commitment to deepening educational connectivity along the Belt and Road.
