Jockey Club Youth Academy for Special Educational Needs Outcome Sharing Seminar cum Speech Day (2021-22)

Over 150 principals, special education educators and parents gathered at the Tai Po campus of The Education University of Hong Kong (EdUHK) today (8 July) for the outcome sharing seminar cum speech day (2021-22) of The Jockey Club Youth Academy for Special Educational Needs (JCYASEN).

Officiating at the ceremony were Professor John Lee Chi-kin, the Vice President (Academic) and Provost of EdUHK; Professor Kenneth Sin Kuen-fung, Director of Centre for Special Educational Needs and Inclusive Education (CSENIE) of EdUHK and JCYASEN; Dr Leung Wing-hung, Chairman of Hong Kong Special Schools Council and Ms Louise So Yuen-yi, Principal Assistant Secretary (Special Education) of the Education Bureau.

Addressing the participants, Professor Lee said, "As part of the University’s ongoing efforts in promoting special education, we are pleased to have played a role over the past two years in this meaningful project, which promotes continuing education among school leavers with special educational needs (SEN). By providing these practical courses and training, we hope to unleash their potential, enhance their competitiveness and prepare them for their future careers.”

During the ceremony, Dr Tang Kit-yi, Lecturer of the Department of Education Studies of Hong Kong Baptist University (HKBU) walked the audience through the “4C Personal Resources Assessment Tool”, a new boardgame co-created by EdUHK and HKBU to help students understand their strengths and abilities. The assessment results not only provide a blueprint for students in future career planning, but also serve as important indicators for educators to formulate appropriate activities for different students. The assessment tool will be distributed for free to all local secondary schools for teachers’ and students’ use.

Thanks to a donation of HK$18 million from The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust, the JCYASEN was established by the CSENIE at EdUHK in 2020 to provide SEN secondary school leavers with one-to-three-year continuous learning opportunities at university. Tailored to enhance SEN students’ self-management and life skills for the 21st century, these courses cover a wide array of areas including life planning, sports and fitness training, special education with adventure-based learning, and music education. A certificate will be issued to students who are able to complete the courses and fulfil the relevant requirements. Furthermore, JCYASEN provides a platform for pre-service teachers and relevant stakeholders to work with the students to advance social inclusion.
