EdUHK Signs Memorandum of Understanding with Nazarbayev University in Kazakhstan to Enhance Educational Exchange and Global Talent Development

The Education University of Hong Kong (EdUHK) joined a business delegation to Kazakhstan led by the Chief Executive of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR), Mr John Lee Ka-chiu. During the visit, EdUHK signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Nazarbayev University, Kazakhstan’s top-ranked institution, to enhance academic exchange and cooperation, building an important bridge for talent development between Hong Kong and Central Asia. 


In addition, EdUHK also signed an MoU with Hong Kong Telecommunications (HKT) on 2 June to create a dedicated scholarship scheme, enabling selected Kazakh students to pursue studies at EdUHK and broaden their international exposure and learning opportunities.


Organised by the Hong Kong Trade Development Council (HKTDC), the delegation comprised around 70 members, including government officials, education leaders, and business representatives. It was the largest overseas mission arranged by the current HKSAR Government to date.


Professor John Lee Chi-Kin, President of EdUHK, who has long driven partnership in Central Asia, said the University has forged close ties with the Ministry of Science and Higher Education in Kazakhstan and leading academic institutions, it has also established an Academy of Education. In recent years, EdUHK doctoral graduates have returned to Kazakhstan, advancing the country’s higher education sector. Professor Lee noted that the new MoUs with Nazarbayev University and HKT mark a new milestone in EdUHK’s efforts to promote regional educational cooperation and talent exchange under the Belt and Road Initiative.


The EdUHK delegation included Professor Bill Yeung Chi-ho, Dean of Students; Professor Pamela Leung Pui-wan, Acting Dean of the Faculty of Humanities; and Dr Faye Wang Yifei, Project Manager of Internationalisation. They were warmly welcomed by Professor Waqar Ahmad, President of Nazarbayev University and other senior leaders. The MoU signing ceremony was witnessed by members of the HKSAR delegation. Under the agreement, the two universities will pursue practical collaboration in joint research, student exchange, academic activities, and talent development, further enhancing the sharing of educational resources and the joint cultivation of talent.
