In his address, Professor John Lee remarked that the theme of the summit not only aligns with current educational needs but also responds to society’s concern for the holistic growth of young people. He underscored that school sponsoring bodies, principals’ associations, school councils, and social service organisations are all vital stakeholders in HKSAR’s education, providing diverse forms of education and services to nurture talents with national sentiment and global vision. He expressed gratitude for the support from all sectors, which enables EdUHK to continue cultivating generations of outstanding teachers and professionals.
Delivering the keynote speech, Hon Professor Starry Lee highlighted that building “a leading country in education” and “a leading sporting nation” are important long-term national strategies. She noted that two complement each other: while education nurtures talent and values, sports strengthen physical fitness and resilience, together providing sustained impetus for nation's modernisation. She further observed that sports not only enhance health but also foster perseverance, resilience, and the spirit of fair competition. She stressed that education and sports sectors must work in concert to cultivate successors equipped to meet future challenges, thereby contributing to the development of both the nation and the HKSAR.
The Hon Kenneth Fok, drawing on the trajectory of national sports development, pointed out that sports not only testify the enhancement of national strength but also play a pivotal role in promoting national identity and public health. He noted that under the “15th Five-Year Plan”, the vision of building a sporting powerhouse expanded beyond competition to encompass “fitness-for-all”, integration of sports and education, and industrial development. He believed that the HKSAR can better integrate into national development by promoting community sports, improving public facilities, and nurturing talents with international vision.
The summit also featured a dialogue with Professor John Lee, Hon Professor Starry Lee, The Most Revd Andrew Chan Au-ming, Mr Eugene Fong Yick-jin (Chairman, Committee on Home-School Co-operation), Principal Lee Yi-ying (Chairman, Hong Kong Subsidized Secondary Schools Council), and Dr Cheung Chok-fong (Advisor, Subsidized Primary Schools Council). They discussed the central role of values education and well-being in contemporary education from perspectives including higher education, policy, school vision, frontline practice, and home-school collaboration.
Professor May Cheng, who moderated the dialogue, concluded that “EdUHK upholds the mission of cultivating values and nurturing people, striving to help students build positive values and inner resilience, and to shape healthy life goals. In response to society’s growing demand for cross-professional collaboration, the University will further enhance curriculum design, strengthening value education, physical and mental well-being, and diverse professional elements.”
