EdUHK Brings in the Year of the Horse with Faculty–Student Festivities

Spring breezes bring warmth, and galloping horses herald joy. To celebrate the arrival of the Year of the Fire Horse (Bingwu), The Education University of Hong Kong (EdUHK) organised a series of vibrant Lunar New Year activities on campus recently, inviting international and local students to experience Chinese traditions and share the festive spirit together.

International Students’ First Taste of Lunar New Year Traditions
To help overseas students immerse themselves in the unique charm of the Spring Festival, the Global Affairs Office hosted a cultural experience session. More than 70 students from Belgium, Denmark, Ethiopia, Finland, Hungary, Kazakhstan, Korea, Myanmar, Norway and Vietnam joined the celebrations: many for the first time.

Surrounded by auspicious red decorations, participants tried their hands at dough figurine crafting, writing Fai Chun (festive calligraphy), preparing boxes of sweets filled with blessings, and printing golden patterns on Lai See envelopes. These traditional crafts showcased Hong Kong’s festive customs and highlighted the beauty of intangible cultural heritage.

Many international students dressed in red to match the festive atmosphere, taking photos and exchanging greetings with local peers. The lively interactions created lasting memories and strengthened cross-cultural connections.

Graduate School’s Festive Gathering
Continuing a tradition, the Graduate School hosted a Lunar New Year celebration with special Year of the Horse elements. Some 200 students joined in, crafting horse-themed lanterns, sewing plush horse dolls, and learning calligraphy under the guidance of the Centre for Chinese Studies, whose members offered demonstrations.

Students and teachers eagerly raised their hands to answer during the spirited New Year quiz competition, filling the hall with laughter and applause. The activity added both festive fun and deepened bonds between staff and students.

ICAC Ambassadors Spread Positive Values
Adding a meaningful dimension to the celebrations, the 2025/26 ICAC Ambassadors, jointly selected by EdUHK’s Student Affairs Office and the Independent Commission Against Corruption (ICAC), organised workshops that combined festive traditions with integrity education.

Students wrote auspicious phrases such as ‘Uphold Integrity’ and ‘Honesty as the Foundation’ on Fai Chun, while their paper-cutting designs blended traditional motifs with themes of integrity and creativity. A total of 68 staff and students participated, producing works that were both festive and educational.

As an important hub for the preservation and promotion of Chinese culture, EdUHK enabled participants to celebrate the festive season together with joy and gain a deeper understanding of Chinese traditions, through such activities.
