EdUHK Holds Opening Ceremony for New Academic Building to Advance the “Education Futures” Blueprint
The Education University of Hong Kong (EdUHK) today (10 February) held a grand opening ceremony at its Tai Po campus to mark the completion of its New Academic Building, a major milestone in celebration of the 10th anniversary of the University’s retitling.
Rising eight storeys tall with a total floor area of approximately 15,000 square metres, the New Academic Building is the University’s first major campus development project since the establishment of its Tai Po campus in 1997. Beyond expanding teaching and research space, the facility represents a new chapter in advancing artificial intelligence, STEM education, and interdisciplinary research.
The new building will complement EdUHK’s existing facilities at Tai Po, together with study centres in North Point, Tseung Kwan O and West Kowloon, to fully realise the University’s “Education Futures” blueprint. The vision is to nurture a new generation of talent with global perspectives and multifaceted skills.
The ceremony was officiated by EdUHK Council Chairman Dr David Wong Yau-kar and President Professor John Lee Chi-Kin, joined by Deputy Council Chairman Professor Terence Chan Ho-wah, Treasurer Ms Imma Ling Kit-sum, Vice President (Academic) Professor May Cheng May-hung, Vice President (Research and Development) Professor Chetwyn Chan Che-hin, Vice President (Administration) Dr Tom Fong Wing-ho, and other members of the senior management.
Dr Wong remarked in his address, “Today marks a significant milestone in the development of EdUHK. What began as a response to spatial needs has now evolved into an eight‑storey landmark, symbolising our vision for the future of education. The building not only expands our campus facilities but also embodies our enduring commitment to innovation, collaboration and excellence.” He expressed his gratitude to the University Grants Committee, the Education Bureau, the Legislative Council, the District Council, as well as the University Council and senior management, emphasising that it was through the steadfast support of the wider community that this facility became a reality.
Professor Lee, reflecting on the University’s progress over the decade since its retitling, said, “The new building fully supports our vision for ‘Education Futures’. Equipped with state‑of‑the‑art teaching and research facilities, it provides a flexible, open and collaborative environment that also attends to the well‑being of staff and students. It will inspire generations of learners to become educators and professionals with diverse skills, ready to meet the challenges ahead and to contribute to the innovative development of education locally, regionally, and internationally.”
The New Academic Building houses a multifunctional lecture theatre with seating for around 400 people, ten classrooms, two virtual classrooms, laboratories with enhanced equipment, ancillary research space and learning commons. The rooftop features a basketball court, underscoring EdUHK’s commitment as an “elite athlete-friendly university”. Photovoltaic panels have also been installed to generate clean energy and reduce carbon emissions. The building has achieved a Gold Rating in the BEAM Plus 1st Provisional Assessment, reaffirming EdUHK’s dedication to sustainable campus development.
To implement the “Education Futures” blueprint, EdUHK has introduced new programmes in AI-related fields such as advanced management, digital governance, learning sciences, and new media. These curricula, together with the facilities of the New Academic Building, further strengthen EdUHK’s role as a hub of educational innovation in Hong Kong and the region.
Looking to the future, EdUHK will continue to deepen local, Chinese Mainland, and international connections, promoting the integration of educational technology and humanistic values, and nurturing professionals who embody global perspectives and diverse skillsets.
