Co-organised by the Centre for Education in Environmental Sustainability (CEES) and the Department of Science and Environmental Studies (SES) at The Education University of Hong Kong (EdUHK), along with other parties, the 22nd Primary STEM Project Exhibition (PSPE) was held today (16 May) at the Hong Kong Central Library. Over 1,000 primary students and teachers from local schools and schools from other places in the region, such as Zhongshan, Guangdong, Shenzhen and Macau, participated in the event. Outstanding works were awarded prizes in recognition of their creativity.

The aim of the exhibition, themed ‘Smart Toys’, was to enhance students’ STEM ability and promote innovation and self-directed learning through observing, reasoning and experimenting. Nearly 200 projects were displayed, and the students shared their experience in integrating STEM elements to create or modify their smart toys.

Professor Winnie So Wing-mui, Chairperson of the organising committee for the exhibition, said, ‘Through these exhibits, the students have demonstrated creativity, innovation, curiosity and joyfulness in their exploration and experimentation, and have come away with a sense of achievement. This is believed to be crucial for effectively promoting students' interest and motivation in STEM learning, as well as teaching.’

Professionals from various fields and dedicated science educators served as adjudicators of the Exhibition, including professionals from government education bodies in both Hong Kong and the Mainland, from the higher education sector, and from different educational organisations. The adjudicators selected the award winners in two categories: Adjudicator Awards and Outstanding Awards. The four participating schools that received Adjudicator Awards were HHCKLA Buddhist Ching Kok Lin Association School, Ying Wa Primary School, Shaukiwan Tsung Tsin School and Hong Kong Baptist Convention Primary School.

Representatives of HHCKLA Buddhist Ching Kok Lin Association School investigated a maze utilising 3D printing and coding techniques; Ying Wa Primary School students designed a claw machine based on the theory of hydraulic pressure; the Shaukiwan Tsung Tsin School team created an intelligent piano with a micro:bit and environmentally friendly materials; and the students from Hong Kong Baptist Convention Primary School succeeded in making a toy horse using residential waste and intelligent tools.

The Exhibition was co-organised by CEES and SES of EdUHK, the Center for STEM Education of the National Institute of Education Sciences, the Chief Executive’s Award for Teaching Excellence Teachers Association, the Education Bureau, the Hong Kong Association for Science and Mathematics Education, Hong Kong Education City Limited, and the Hong Kong Science Museum. It was sponsored by TeleEye Founders' Charity Foundation Limited.
