The application of artificial intelligence (AI) in classroom and its impact on learning have drawn wide attention. A research team at The Education University of Hong Kong (EdUHK), led by Professor Yan Zi, Head of the Department of Curriculum and Instruction, and supported by the Research Grants Counci’s Senior Research Fellow Scheme, has developed an AI learning platform. Since June 2025, 2,200 students from 10 secondary schools and six primary schools have participated in a systematic research study. 

Initial findings indicate that, through personalised practice and assessment tailored to students’ needs, the platform effectively fosters self-regulated learning and supports academic improvement. The team emphasises that AI’s true potential in enhancing learning and teaching lies not in computational power or speed alone, but in its capacity to foster self-regulated learning through a scientific, robust, and student-centred assessment framework. In this approach, AI serves as a partner to students in their learning, rather than replacing the students’ thinking process. The study provides an important reference for Hong Kong’s digital transformation in education.

Professor Yan Zi and his team, together with Mr Liang Kwun‑fan, Principal of ELCHK Lutheran Secondary School, and the teacher representative from the school that participated in the pioneer study, will share their findings and experiences at the press conference next Tuesday (25 August).
