Honorary Professor Starry Lee Wai-king Shares Insights on the History and Lessons on ‘Victory in the War of Resistance’
Over 400 students from The Education University of Hong Kong (EdUHK) attended a General Education lecture entitled ‘Victory in the War of Resistance’ on 13 October. During the event, the University’s Honorary Professor Starry Lee Wai-king, member of Legislative Council of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region of the People’s Republic of China (HKSAR), shared insights on the historical significance and contemporary lessons of the Chinese People's War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression (War of Resistance). She encouraged young people to learn from history and take responsibility for contributing to the future development of the HKSAR and the nation.
In his welcome remarks, EdUHK President, Professor John Lee Chi-Kin, stated, “Revisiting the history of the War of Resistance not only helps us understand more deeply the power of national spirit but also equips us with wisdom and courage to face contemporary challenges. Professor Starry Lee’s talk will help our students gain a deeper appreciation of hard-earned peace and development, inspiring them to learn from history and contribute to the prosperity of HKSAR and our nation.”
Dr David Kang Jong Hyuk, Director of General Education, introduced Professor Starry Lee’s remarkable achievements, describing her as an outstanding leader in Hong Kong society with a long-standing commitment to public service and patriotic education.
During the lecture, Professor Starry Lee reviewed the 14-year period from the ‘Mukden Incident’ to Japan’s unconditional surrender, highlighting how the Chinese people resisted foreign aggression with unyielding spirit and made significant contributions to the global victory over fascism. “The victory in the War of Resistance is a monumental milestone in the history of national rejuvenation, and a cornerstone of our values in cherishing peace and upholding justice,” she explained.
She also presented a series of valuable historical materials and offered an in-depth analysis of Hong Kong’s unique role during the war, such as serving as a key transportation hub for war supplies, organising medical assistance teams and service corps, and rescuing cultural figures, as well as forming armed resistance units like the Hong Kong-Kowloon Independent Brigade.
Concluding the lecture, Professor Starry Lee encouraged students to carry forward the spirit of resistance and patriotism, to cherish today’s peace, and to actively participate in the development of HKSAR and the nation.
