EdUHK Hosts First International Conference of Human Developmental Neuroscience (ICHDN)
The Education University of Hong Kong (EdUHK) University Research Facility of Human Behavioural Neuroscience (UHBN) hosted its first International Conference of Human Developmental Neuroscience (ICHDN) on 27 and 28 August on its Tai Po campus. Featuring discussions around four main themes (human cognitive and behavioural development, human social and affective development, neurodevelopmental disorders and mental health, and brain augmentation and neuroscience technologies), the two-day conference attracted more than 100 distinguished scholars and industry experts from around the world.
Delivering welcome remarks at the opening ceremony, Professor Ken Yung Kin-lam, Associate Vice President (Research) and Director of the University Research Facilities of Human Behavioural Neuroscience of EdUHK, remarked, “This gathering of scientists will showcase pioneering research from leading experts worldwide, creating a dynamic forum for innovative ideas and transformative insights into human development, encouraging meaningful discussions and collaboration.”
During the conference, the experts engaged in discussion, including physiological assessments, behavioural studies, and cutting-edge neuroimaging techniques. They shared their latest research findings and practical experiences in the fields of human developmental neuroscience, highlighting the neural mechanisms, potential interventions, and implications for enhancing learning across the lifespan.
Notable speakers included Professor Michael Thomas from Birkbeck, University of London, Professor Annabel Chen Shen-hsing from the Nanyang Technological University Singapore, and Professor Chetwyn Chan Che-hin, Vice President (Research and Development) of EdUHK. They spoke on neuroscience relevant to education and cognitive development, the evolving understanding of the cerebellum's role in working memory and reading, and the effects of aging on cognitive speed, encoding, and memory respectively.
Furthermore, Professor Sandra Chan Sau-man from the Chinese University of Hong Kong, Professor Lin Kangguang from the Affiliated Brain Hospital of Guangzhou Medical University, and Professor Li Hui from the First Affiliated Hospital of Xi’an Jiaotong University, joined the discussions on understanding early detection and holistic intervention strategies for child and adolescent mental health, innovative approaches to identifying and treating mood disorders, and the development of integrated systems for early diagnosis and intervention.
A pre-conference workshop on functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) was held on 25 and 26 August, providing attendees with hands-on experience and a comprehensive overview of the latest fNIRS technologies, offering opportunities for researchers, clinicians, and industry professionals for knowledge exchange and discussion.
