The Education University of Hong Kong held a forum today (22 November) titled “Envisioning Opportunities from the One Belt, One Road Strategy for the Economic Development of Hong Kong”, attracting over 100 participants.

Supported by The Chinese Manufacturers’ Association of Hong Kong (CMA), EdUHK initiated the project “Understanding China’s Socio-Economic Development in the Era of Globalization” in 2015, with the goal of enhancing public awareness of the social and economic dimensions of development in China in the era of globalization, in addition to establishing an academic platform for discussing how Hong Kong can bolster its role in the evolving strategic context of China’s economic transformation.

Among the speakers were Professor Frederick Ma Si-hang, EdUHK’s Council Chairman; Dr Eddy Li Sau-hung, President of the CMA; and Professor Francis T. Lui, Adjunct Professor at The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology. Forum topics include the internationalisation of the renminbi, the growth of offshore renminbi centres, and proactive roles for Hong Kong in the One Belt, One Road Initiative.

Delivering his welcome speech, Professor Stephen Cheung Yan-leung, EdUHK President said, “One Belt, One Road is a strategic initiative that will have tremendous benefits for the economic and financial development of Hong Kong. This forum establishes a policy-based academic dialogue that provides a range of insights into how different sectors in Hong Kong can seize the opportunities offered by the initiative”.

Dr Eddy Li Sau-hung, President of the CMA, said, “The One Belt, One Road Initiative is an important development strategy of Mainland China. Apart from offering tremendous opportunities for the business sector, this strategy will deepen economic and cultural exchanges amongst countries in the area through the promotion of tourism, employment, education and entrepreneurial activity. We should begin with promoting education in order to sustain the continuity of this strategic initiative.”

A new book titled The Contemporary Socio-Economic Development of China in the Age of Globalisation was launched at the event. The book provides an overview of the opportunities and challenges in the trajectory of China’s socio-economic development and identifies the significance of the One Belt, One Road Initiative for global economic development.
