Through the Sustainable Humanities (SUSHUM) Project, the International Research Centre for Cultural Studies (IRCCS) organised a series of three guided tours and a pottery workshop in November 2025 under the theme ‘Reimagining EdUHK: The Eco-community Tour’ (「較大教大想像:生態社區導賞團」).
Over 40 students and staff joined the tours, which encouraged participants to rediscover the University’s interconnected ecological and social networks while fostering care for our neighbourhood and building new bonds across the campus community. The first session on 4 November introduced the Eco Garden, where Ms Wong Yuen-sam Diana from the Department of Science and Environmental Studies presented EdUHK’s green initiatives and ecological design. On 13 and 20 November, Mr Chong Yiu‑kwong from the Department of Education Policy and Leadership guided participants through both the campus and Tung Tsz Village, revealing community histories, landscapes, and the University’s relationship with its surroundings.
This cross‑departmental initiative fostered collaboration across disciplines while linking human and non-human forms of care. Following the tours, around 20 students and staff took part in a two‑session pottery workshop, ‘Caring for EdUHK’s Insects and Friends’ (「不如關心吓教大同學和昆蟲陶瓷班」), led by local ceramic artist Ms Lavender Wong. In collaboration with environmental scholar Prof Roger Lee from Lingnan University Science Unit, Ms Wong blended ceramic craftsmanship with ecological knowledge to co‑design pottery ‘bug hotels’, offering temporary habitats for insects and enhancing campus biodiversity.
By integrating environmental learning with artistic practice, the programme reflected EdUHK's vision of a compassionate and sustainable university community. Through these collaborative experiences, participants deepened their ecological awareness while translating care into tangible action—whether through understanding campus ecosystems or creating habitats for insects. The initiative demonstrated how creative engagement and interdisciplinary collaboration can foster a stronger sense of community responsibility, contributing to EdUHK's broader commitment to sustainability and meaningful connection among students, staff, and the environment.
