EdUHK Symposium on Managing Politics of  Social Policy Reforms in Chinese Societies

A group of leading social policy experts from mainland China, Taiwan and Hong Kong gathered at The Education University of Hong Kong (EdUHK) today (23 November), to engage in extensive discussion on how the political dynamics in these three territories are shaping their respective social policy making.

Entitled “Managing the Politics of Social Policy Reforms in Chinese Societies”, the symposium was organised by the Centre for Greater China Studies (CGCS) at EdUHK. Scholars from Academia Sinica, The Chinese University of Hong Kong, National Taiwan University, Renmin University of China, Sun Yat-sen University, Tsinghua University, The University of Hong Kong, and EdUHK discussed the politics and implications of a wide range of ongoing social policy reforms in mainland China, Hong Kong and Taiwan, including retirement protection, health care, housing, social services and labour policy.

The event was enhanced by the attendance of Professor Yaung Chih-liang, former Minister of Health of the Republic of China (Taiwan), who served as practitioner-discussant, fostering intellectual exchanges between policy makers and researchers. Earlier on the same day, Professor Yaung delivered a seminar entitled “Public Policy-making in Democratic Societies: the Former Minister of Health Telling the Taiwan Story” in which he generously shared his experiences and insights.

Speaking at the symposium, Professor Lui Tai-lok, Vice President (Research and Development) of EdUHK and Director of CGCS, welcomed the opportunity to host the event, adding that “the University encourages more comparative research initiatives based on the diverse policy practices in the Greater China region.” He also affirmed that the Centre would continue to support such research programmes.
