EdUHK Hosts 8th ESDGC STEGRAM Dissemination cum Awards Ceremony Recognising Outstanding Contributions to Education for Sustainable Development
The Education University of Hong Kong (EdUHK) hosted the 8th ESDGC STEGRAM Dissemination cum Awards Ceremony on July 19 (Sunday) at its Tai Po campus. Organised by the Department of Curriculum and Instruction, the event drew over 670 participants, including scholars, industry practitioners, principals, teachers, students, and parents. The event showcased the latest achievements of the STEGRAMS Programme in education for sustainable development (ESD) and recognised outstanding teachers and students.
The “STEGRAMS Academy ESDGC Student Leadership Programme,” initiated by Dr Margaret Ng Cheuk-wing, Senior Lecturer of the Department of Curriculum and Instruction at EdUHK, is the first Education for SDG Scheme in Hong Kong proposed by EdUHK. The programme brings together teachers and students from diverse institutions and disciplines, fostering entrepreneurial spirit, collaborative skills, and global perspective through interdisciplinary learning.
Since its inception, the programme has achieved remarkable results. Participants include students from seven secondary schools, ten primary schools and one kindergarten in Hong Kong, as well as seven international schools from Guangzhou, Shenzhen, and Sweden. Seven specialised hubs — STEM, Book, Talk, Art, Service, Culture and Game — have been established, integrating multi-level (from kindergarten to university) and interdisciplinary elements to broaden perspectives and cultivate critical thinking. The programme also strengthens collaboration between EdUHK and partner schools, building an ecosystem for sustainability education.
In his video address, Professor John Lee Chi-Kin, President of EdUHK, stated that since its inception in 2018, the programme has progressively transformed from an inspiring concept into tangible achievements, making significant progress in advancing education for sustainable development and global citizenship. “Over the past eight years, we have worked hand in hand with teachers, students, partner institutions, and various sectors of society to turn our vision into action, witnessing the power of education in nurturing’ green talent,’” he said. “Today's gathering is not merely a ceremony, but an important milestone as we move forward together toward a sustainable future.”
Dr Margaret Ng said that the programme nurtures a vibrant community of practice where teachers and students become co-learners, transcending traditional boundaries to deepen their mastery of marine ecology. “By cultivating the ‘green talent’ our society demands, we empower our youth to take ownership of environmental protection and lead vital restoration efforts,” she added.
Dr Ng concluded by highlighting seven key achievements:
- Established a robust community for learning
- Developed a cross-level teaching strategy spanning from primary to university level
- Established a cross-level mentorship scheme
- Demonstrated the effectiveness of primary and secondary teaching and learning through university-led academic research
- Initiated collaborative research papers co-authored by university, primary and secondary teachers
- Launched the 2nd AI-powered Storytelling
- Launched the 1st AI-powered Storytelling in Early Childhood Education
The ceremony featured keynote speeches on sustainable development, global citizenship education, eco art, gamified service-learning, and co-constructing the Greater Bay Area ESG ecosystem. In addition, 56 principals and teachers from partner schools, together with 391 primary and secondary school “Future Sustainability Leaders,” shared their experiences and presented their latest learning and research outcomes. Exhibition areas, book booths, and game booths were also set up, attracting enthusiastic participation.
