EdUHK Delegation Attends Meeting of China–Central Asia Ministers of Education and Inauguration of Central Asia Institute of the Global Teachers Development Institute
Professor John Lee Chi-Kin, President of The Education University of Hong Kong (EdUHK), led a delegation to Urumqi, Xinjiang on 12 May to attend the inaugural meeting of the China-Central Asia Ministers of Education and the opening ceremony of the Central Asia Institute of the Global Teachers Development Institute.
This high-profile meeting was organised by China’s Ministry of Education and brought together for the first time ministers of education from China, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan, as well as senior officials from education authorities. Professor Ma Xingrui, Party Secretary of Xinjiang and member of the Politburo of the Chinese Communist Party, gave a welcome speech at the meeting, and Huai Jinpeng, Minister of Education, delivered a keynote speech.
The opening ceremony of the Central Asia Institute of the Global Teachers Development Institute was attended by representatives of universities, including Professor John Lee Chi-Kin, Professor Ainiwaer Aikemu, President of Xinjiang Normal University, Dr Narbekova Banu, Vice Rector of Abai Kazakh National Pedagogical University, and Professor Wang Ming, Vice President of Beijing Normal University. Professor Lo Sing-kai, Associate Vice President (Internationalisation), also attended the meeting as a representative from EdUHK.
The Central Asia Institute of the Global Teachers Development Institute is a flagship project of educational cooperation under the "Belt and Road" initiative, spearheaded by the Ministry of Education of China. Hosted by Xinjiang Normal University, the institute aims to leverage Xinjiang's geographical advantages to foster international teacher development exchange and cooperation with Central Asian countries. EdUHK was the only institution from Hong Kong invited to the unveiling ceremony, reflecting its leadership and influence in education cooperation across Central Asia.
Over the years, EdUHK has deepened its engagement in higher education cooperation with Central Asia, establishing extensive educational partnerships with universities in the region. The University has conducted multiple teacher capacity-building programmes and advanced joint research initiatives in the region. Additionally, the EdUHK-Kazakh Academy of Education in Almaty, Kazakhstan, has officially begun operation, injecting new momentum into educational cooperation under the Belt and Road Initiative.
