Academic Year Inauguration cum Flag Raising Ceremony

The Education University of Hong Kong (EdUHK) held the Academic Year Inauguration cum Flag Raising Ceremony on its Tai Po campus today (5 September), marking the start of the new academic year.

Officiating at the event were President Professor Stephen Cheung Yan-leung, Vice President (Academic) and Provost Professor John Lee Chi-kin and Vice President (Research and Development) Professor Chetwyn Chan Che-hin. They were joined by over 350 staff and students, together with a flag raising team made up of EdUHK students.

Extending his warmest welcome to all students, Professor Cheung encouraged freshmen to immerse themselves in various activities. He said, “I am pleased to see the vibrant and enlivening campus with the return of students. My gratitude goes to faculty members for their efforts in the preparation of the University’s new academic year. Through orientation programmes, the provision of peer support for the new students was made possible by the devotion of senior students.

I hope all our students will make the most of every learning opportunity to equip themselves with knowledge and broaden their horizons.” He added, “I hope everyone can stay strong and optimistic amid the prolonged pandemic.”

Rola Chan Tsz-ying, a Year 2 student in the Bachelor of Education (Honours) (Chinese Language) programme, said, “The pandemic has affected our campus life in many ways. With excitement, I look forward to having more interactions with lecturers and my fellow students in the new academic year, and starting a rewarding and fruitful university life.”

EdUHK will resume face-to-face classes in the new academic year. This was the first time for the University to include the flag raising ceremony in the inauguration. In addition to hoisting the national, regional and university flags on each school day, EdUHK also conducts flag raising ceremonies each Monday and on important dates.
