Mathematical Cognition and Learning Society Annual Conference held at EdUHK
The 8th Annual Conference of the Mathematical Cognition and Learning Society (MCLS) was held between 9 and 11 June at the Tai Po campus of The Education University of Hong Kong (EdUHK). The conference attracted over 250 experts and scholars from 27 countries and regions, to discuss the latest research and developments in the field of mathematical cognition and learning.
In his video opening address, EdUHK President Professor John Lee Chi-Kin, emphasised the growing importance of interdisciplinary research. “The field of mathematical cognition is rapidly expanding, with researchers from disciplines such as education, psychology and neuroscience making ground-breaking contributions that enhance its scope and impact,” he said.
Founded in the United States in 2013, MCLS is dedicated to promoting exchange and collaboration among researchers in mathematical cognition and learning sciences. Since 2016, MCLS has held an annual meeting to bring together researchers from around the world to advance the development of this field.
This year's conference, organised by MCLS and hosted by EdUHK’s Department of Early Childhood Education, marked the first time the MCLS annual meeting was held in Asia. The three-day event covered a wide range of topics related to mathematical cognition and learning, including mathematics learning and teaching, atypical development, fostering mathematical thinking, and the home mathematics environment.
The conference organising committee’s co-chair, Dr Jenny Chan Yun-Chen, Assistant Professor of the Department of Early Childhood Education at EdUHK, encouraged attendees to make the most of the conference to explore new ideas, forge meaningful connections, and build collaborations.
In her closing remarks, Dr Emma Buchtel, Associate Dean (International Engagement) of EdUHK’s Faculty of Education and Human Development (FEHD) said, “By advocating for the central role of mathematical cognition in academic research and policy, its sustainability and impact on shaping education and learning can be ensured.”
