Prior to joining The Education University of Hong Kong, Professor Saskia Van Viegen held academic appointments in Canada, most recently as Associate Professor in the Department of Languages, Literatures and Linguistics at York University, Canada, where she also served as Undergraduate Programme Director for Languages and Literatures and Coordinator of the TESOL Programme. She holds a PhD in Curriculum Studies and Teacher Development from the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education, University of Toronto.
Professor Van Viegen’s research and scholarship focus on bi- and multilingualism and language assessment, situated at the intersection of applied linguistics, TESOL, and literacy studies. Her work examines how plurilingual and multilingual approaches can inform assessment and pedagogy, advancing fair and equitable language-in-education practices across diverse educational contexts. She has contributed extensively to funded research projects in Canada and internationally, supported by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada, Global Affairs Canada, and the Standing Committee on Language Education and Research in Hong Kong, among others. Her publications appear in leading international journals, including TESOL Quarterly, Language Assessment Quarterly and Journal of English for Academic Purposes. She is co-editor of Plurilingual Pedagogies: Critical and Creative Undertakings for Equitable Language (in) Education (Springer, 2020) and Multilingualisms in Education: Conversations among Southern and Northern Scholars (Bloomsbury, forthcoming).
Professor Van Viegen serves as Editor-in-Chief of Critical Inquiry in Language Studies and co-editor of the Translanguaging Theory and Practice book series (Multilingual Matters). Through her research, editorial leadership, and international collaborations, she continues to shape contemporary understandings of multilingual education and assessment, contributing to more inclusive and socially responsive approaches to language learning worldwide.
