Supervisor Sharing Session on Effective Mentorship for Year 1 PhD Students

The Graduate School of the Education University of Hong Kong reaffirmed its commitment to PhD students' professional and personal development in the fourth supervisor sharing session of the academic year on March 28, 2024.

Two key members of the Graduate School’s leadership team, Vice President (Research and Development), Professor Chetwyn Chan, and Dean of Graduate School, Professor Michelle Gu, hosted the session which focused on effective mentorship for year one PhD students.

Six principal supervisors of year one PhD students from different departments participated in the informal sharing session.

Professor Chan and Professor Gu met with the supervisors to explore various strategies and approaches that can contribute to PhD students’ growth and success during their studies and future careers.

It is hoped that the insights and experiences shared by Professor Chan and Professor Gu, and recommendations put forward by supervisors will contribute to the discussion on the enhancement of research skills, mentorship, and career prospects for PhD students.

Enhancing professional outcomes for PhD students was the focus of a sharing between top representatives of the Graduate School’s management team and supervisors on February 20, 2024.

Six Principal Supervisors of Year 1 PhD Students, Professor Chetwyn Chan, the Vice President (Research and Development) and Professor Michelle Gu, Dean of Graduate School, discussed the enhancement of research skills, providing effective mentorship, and expanding career prospects for PhD students.

It was the third such meeting of the academic year.

The meetings aim to explore strategies and approaches that can actively contribute to PhD students’ professional and career development, ensuring their growth and success.

The Graduate School will continue to host these meetings to support and encourage supervisors, students and other key stakeholders.
