Ms Lin Yongqi Louise, Graduate of Master of Arts in Music Education 2022/23
The Master of Arts in Music Education (MA(ME)) programme has been the most defining and rewarding choice in my musical journey. I graduated in 2023 from the MA(ME) programme. After graduation, I pursued a professional path as a singer-songwriter, gaining recognition through my original compositions and performances at national-level events.
Through the MA(ME) programme, I came to understand that ideas are greater than music, and that the boundaries of music can be expanded endlessly. In the Music Improvisation course, we explored the creation of sounds and melodies using a wide range of instruments. With the encouragement of my supervisor, Dr Matthew Thibeault, I learned that music is not reserved only for those deemed ‘most talented’; rather, it belongs to anyone who loves it.
This realisation gave me the confidence to begin composing my own music and stepping onto the stage with greater courage. Beyond my academic studies, I also participated in psychological support training courses organised by the University, as well as campus-wide mental health advocacy initiatives. These experiences deepened my awareness of the psychological pressures faced by many people living in contemporary urban societies. Inspired by this understanding, I composed my first original single, ‘Turn Off the Computer and Stop Overthinking’, which won the third prize in the ‘Our New Era’ songwriting competition jointly organised by the Guangdong Federation of Literary and Art Circles, the Guangdong Musicians Association, and Tencent Music Entertainment Group’s Kugou Music. I also received a creative award of RMB 10,000.
Music can also be a powerful medium for positive expression. In November 2025, I had the honour of performing on one of China’s largest stages—the 15th National Games—where I sang the volunteer theme song ‘We Are All Here’. Looking ahead, I will continue to embrace the inclusive philosophy of music education cultivated at EdUHK, creating works with a distinctive musical voice that inspire young people and using music to document lived narratives that resonate with the spirit of our times.
