Since 2021, over the past three years, the Education University of Hong Kong partnered with the University of Lapland on the Global Media Education (GloMED) project (https://glomed.webnode.fi/) funded by the Finnish National Agency for Education. The Project Team comprised of Dr Satu-Maarit Korte (Principal Investigator), Professor Pigga Keskitalo and Professor Mari Maasilta from the University of Lapland and The Education University of Hong Kong (EdUHK)’s President Professor John Lee Chi-Kin (Principal Investigator), Professor Kong Siu-Cheung, Dr William Man Yin Cheung, and FHM colleagues Dr Lau Chaak Ming, Dr Wang Lixun, and Prof. Gu Mingyue Michelle.

The GloMED project sought to develop a joint study course on Global Media Education through collaborative knowledge exchange between experts. It was based on the collaboration between the two universities in the UNITWIN/UNESCO Network on Teacher Education for Social Justice and Diversity in Education.

Hosted by FHM, Dr Satu-Maarit Korte and Professor Mari Maasilta from the University of Lapland came to EdUHK on three separate occasions between December 2022 and April 2023. During those visits, Dr Satu-Maarit Korte gave a public talk about Finland education system, and Professor Maasilta delivered a public seminar on the dangers and promises of social media from the point of view of media educators.

In June 2023, team members from EdUHK visited the University of Lapland, and had the opportunity to meet with the Vice Rector, Professor Satu Uusiautti, Director of International Relations Mari-Anna Suurmunne, and the Dean of the Faculty of Education, Professor Tuija Turunen, who is also UArctic chair and the leader of the UNITWIN/UNESCO Network on Teacher Education for Social Justice and Diversity. In August 2023, team members from EdUHK visited the University of Lapland for the second time, and conducted teaching sessions on topics such as AI literacy and intercultural communication to MA students studying the Global Media Education course.

FHM is currently planning to establish formal student and staff exchange programmes with the Faculty of Education of the University of Lapland.
