Online Workshop Series 2026: Corpus-Based Language Pedagogy Meets Multimodal Generative AI

The Department of Linguistics and Modern Language Studies (LML) and the Global English Education China Assembly successfully organised the Online Workshop Series 2026: ‘Corpus-Based Language Pedagogy Meets Multimodal Generative AI’ from 4 March to 9 April 2026.

On 4 March 2026, Prof Ma Qing delivered a workshop titled ‘Corpus-Based Language Pedagogy Empowered by AI and Multimodal Generative AI’. The session presented an applied approach to using real-language corpora to inform teaching and learning, and then extending this evidence base with modern AI tools to enhance lesson preparation and learner support. Participants explored how to move from corpus findings to concrete classroom activities that promote noticing, meaning-making, and accurate production. Emphasis was placed on using AI responsibly to streamline a corpus-informed workflow, including helping teachers interpret results, generate teaching materials, and design differentiated practice aligned with language behaviour observed in the corpus. The workshop also highlighted the added affordances of multimodal generative AI, encouraging participants to consider how multimodal inputs and outputs can support richer interaction and practice for language learners.

The workshop series was also listed as an official 10A celebratory activity to commemorate EdUHK’s 10th Anniversary of Retitling.
