The Department of English Language Education (ELE) hosted the 8th Annual eTEACHERS Roundtable on 6 June 2026 at The Education University of Hong Kong Tai Po Campus. Under the theme ‘Learning Together’, the event brought together more than 150 classroom teachers, school leaders, and academics in Hong Kong, with around 50 professors and teachers from Indonesia joining online. The Roundtable focused on the growing role of teacher-facing and student-facing AI in English language education.
Prof Hans Ladegaard, Head of ELE, opened the event by highlighting the importance of teachers learning from one another and reflecting collectively on effective practice. Dr Timothy Taylor introduced the Roundtable themes and moderated a panel discussion with ELE colleagues Dr Lucas Kohnke and Mr Denis Wong, together with school leaders and English education practitioners. The discussion addressed both the opportunities and challenges of AI use in lesson planning, assessment, and classroom learning, including ethical and practical questions raised by participants.
A highlight of the event was the sharing by Ms Cheung Wai-shan and Mr Eric Chan from Lok Tao Secondary School, who presented their AI-mediated blended learning project designed to support students’ critical AI literacy and oral presentation skills. Their project includes the development of a chatbot, ‘The Devil’s Advocate’, which prompts students with critical and challenging questions to deepen reflection and learning. The Roundtable concluded with six breakout sessions, where speakers shared practical resources and strategies for responsible AI use in English teaching. Event materials will be made available on the eTEACHERS Community of Practice professional development hub (https://eteachers.online).
