The Routledge Handbook of Translating and Interpreting Conflict, co-edited by Dr Marija Todorova from the Department of Linguistics and Modern Language Studies at EdUHK and Dr Lucía Ruiz Rosendo from the University of Geneva, Switzerland, has been published.
This landmark volume offers a comprehensive exploration of the vital role of language in conflict settings. From military operations and humanitarian missions to peacebuilding processes and asylum cases, the Handbook sheds light on how language professionals bridge communication under some of the most challenging and high-stakes conditions.
The book covers a wide array of contemporary issues, including interpreter safety, ethical and emotional challenges, and the growing influence of technology in interpreting and translation during crises. It also explores less examined areas such as the work of women interpreters, the translation of peace agreements, and the linguistic aspects of environmental conflicts. It spans diverse historical periods and geographical regions, from the medieval Iberian Peninsula to the conflict in Ukraine, and features an impressive range of methodologies, from archival research and ethnography to interviews, memoirs, and film analysis. Overall, the collection blends rigorous scholarship with real-world insight.
As Prof Myriam Salama-Carr from the University of Manchester, UK, notes: “The Handbook offers a timely interdisciplinary mapping of the use, role, and modalities of translation and interpreting in situations of armed conflicts. It incorporates a range of micro-histories and provides comprehensive coverage of existing research in the field, together with insights into the impact of technology on the processes of translation and interpreting in the context of armed conflicts.”
