Inspired by the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goal 11, ‘Establishing the Society on Film and Sustainability’, one of the sub-projects of SUSHUM project, continues to pioneer creative approaches to sustainability, using storytelling as a dynamic tool to connect the EdUHK campus with its surrounding communities. The recent workshops and community tours have empowered students and staff to discover, document, and share the everyday stories and evolving landscapes that make EdUHK unique.
By encouraging participants to use their mobile phones to record changes, stories, and hidden corners, the project has made filmmaking accessible, meaningful, and participatory. Over the past month, students/staff-produced-content has reached an impressive 6,166 views, demonstrating a strong collective interest in the stories that shape the campus and the neighbourhoods beyond.
On 28 April 2025, guided by staff with deep knowledge of EdUHK’s history and everyday life, 12 students and staff explored campus landmarks, listened to untold stories, and recorded their discoveries through film and photography. This hands-on tour encouraged participants to look beyond the familiar surroundings and reimagine their daily environment as a living archive of memories.
At an interactive EdUHK Community Map Story booth from 29 to 30 April 2025, 15 members of the community contributed personal stories, memories, and favourite spots, collaboratively mapping the campus through drawings, interviews, and short videos. The booth became a hub for dialogue, inviting everyone to reflect on what makes EdUHK special and to appreciate the diverse experiences that shape the University’s shared space.
Expanding beyond the campus, 20 participants ventured into nearby villages, temples, and natural trails in Tai Po in a Community Tour on 21 May 2025. Using their phones as creative tools, they captured a rich tapestry of local life and landscape, deepening the connection between EdUHK and its neighbouring communities.
By using film to document, connect, and reflect, the project is not only building a living archive of EdUHK’s evolving story, but also nurturing a more sustainable, inclusive, and resilient campus culture.
