Building on the success of the initial initiative ‘Revolutionising Language Education: Integrating AI Technology into Corpus-aided English-Speaking Training’, the upgraded Project 2.0, titled ‘Creating a Package for Enhancing English Speaking Instruction with Corpus & AI Assistance’, continues to drive innovation in English speaking pedagogy. Led by Dr Rebecca Chen, Associate Director of the Centre for Research on Linguistics and Language Studies, this phase deepens the integration of AI with corpus-aided learning to provide a more personalised, data-driven, and interactive speaking practice experience.
The project focuses on: 1) enhancing the existing corpus & AI-aided framework by incorporating the TPACK model; 2) expanding the collection of AI tools with diverse functionalities suitable for speaking instruction; 3) developing a comprehensive corpus & AI-aided teaching package for both pre- and in-service language teachers; and 4) launching a hub website featuring an AI toolkit and guidance for designing corpus & AI-aided English speaking teaching tasks.
Since its launch, Project 2.0 has achieved significant success through various outreach activities. Workshops and sharing sessions were held in Dalian, Hong Kong, and online, engaging over 500 audience, including students, teachers, and international educators. These sessions explored the use of a self-developed spoken corpus (https://corpus.eduhk.hk/english_speech_corpus/) and AI tools to improve four key aspects of speaking performance (i.e., grammatical range and accuracy, lexical resource, fluency and coherence, and pronunciation). A presentation was also delivered at the 2025 Taiwan CALL International Conference from 8 to 9 May 2025. For more details, please visit the project website (https://corpus.eduhk.hk/english_speaking/index.php/corpus-ai-aided-training/), which is currently in its final stage of development.
With growing interest and promising feedback, Dr Chen and her team will continue to explore how corpus, AI, and learner agency can transform English speaking instruction.
