School of Cantonese Studies held from 27 to 31 May 2019.
The School of Cantonese Studies, co-organised by the Department of Linguistics and Modern Language Studies and the Centre for Research on Linguistics and Language Studies, as well as sponsored by the Tin Ka Ping Foundation and The Linguistic Society of Hong Kong, was held from 27 to 31 May 2019. The School aimed to (a) introduce recent developments and knowledge on different domains in Cantonese Studies to the participants; (b) introduce systematic and rigorous methodologies for conducting research on Cantonese; and (c) provide a venue for scholarly exchange and interaction between scholars and participants of different backgrounds who are interested in Cantonese Studies.
The School attracted about 60 participants from different parts of the world, including Hong Kong, mainland China, France, Malaysia, Russia, Singapore, Taiwan, the United Kingdom and the United States. 12 guest speakers delivered their guest lectures covering a number of areas in Cantonese studies: Cantonese sound system, Cantonese grammar, Cantonese operas, Cantonese worlds, sociolinguistic aspects and history of Cantonese, online resources for Cantonese studies, Cantonese literature and writing, historical development of Cantonese, and peripheral Yue dialects.
Professor Stephen Cheung Yan Leung, President of The Education University of Hong Kong (EdUHK), gave his welcoming remarks to the participants and the guest speakers of the School. Professor Cheung remarked that “in the past few years, EdUHK has had a number of research initiatives related to Cantonese. These diversified initiatives laid a solid foundation for EdUHK to develop into a research hub of Cantonese Studies in future”.
