EdUHK Joins Hands with Xiqu Centre to Stage Cantonese Opera Teaching Awards Ceremony

The Research Centre for Transmission of Cantonese Opera (RCTCO) at The Education University of Hong Kong (EdUHK) held a ceremony today (6 February) to present the ‘Cantonese Opera Teaching Awards for Hong Kong Music Teachers 2022’. The awards were given in recognition of outstanding music teachers’ dedication to promoting Cantonese opera through innovative teaching.

Jointly organised with the Xiqu Centre of the West Kowloon Cultural District and supported by the Rural Training College Alumni Association, the winners were chosen by a judging panel comprising professionals from education, academics, Cantonese opera, culture, and other fields. The panel evaluated the contents of teaching plans, creativity and the effectiveness of the participating teachers.

Serving as the Chairperson of the Judging Panel, RCTCO Director Professor Leung Bo-wah said, “Judging from the teaching plans and educational videos submitted, we are impressed by the tremendous effort put into arousing students’ interest in Cantonese opera. I hope that, in the not-too-distant future, there will be more music teachers who can incorporate Cantonese opera into schools’ music curriculum.”

Ms Leung On-to from New Asia Middle School, and Ms Janet Kar Wing-suet from Ng Wah Catholic Primary School – winners of the Golden Award in the Secondary and Primary school categories, respectively – welcomed the recognition. Ms Leung said, “The students were curious about Cantonese opera, and responded well in the classes.” Ms Kar said, “My school values the transmission of Chinese culture, and Cantonese opera is an effective way to achieve this.”
