EdUHK Honours College Welcomes Second Pilot Cohort with Inauguration cum Pledging Ceremony
The Education University of Hong Kong (EdUHK) on 22 September hosted the Inauguration cum Pledging Ceremony for the second pilot cohort of EdUHK Honours College. Established in March this year, the Honours College is a flagship programme aimed at nurturing future-ready educators and professionals with proper virtues and the potential to make a lasting impact on society. Through three transformative pathways, namely the Pathway for Research, Innovation and Discovery Excellence (PRIDE), Emerging Leaders in Innovation, Technology, Excellence – AI Pathway (ELITE-AI Pathway), and Performance Analysts Transforming Horizons (PATH Academy), the Honours College cultivates both academic and non-academic excellence across academics and research, artificial intelligence and innovation, and sports science. To date, it has provided the first pilot cohort with diverse opportunities including internships and exchanges, mentorship, multidisciplinary learning, and research experiences in Hong Kong and overseas.
The second pilot cohort comprises 20 high-calibre local and non-local students selected through a rigorous process. Beyond their outstanding academic performance, they have excelled in diverse fields, ranging from artificial intelligence and music to sports. As with the inaugural cohort, the new students will benefit from exclusive experiences designed to broaden their horizons and foster their personal and professional growth.
The ceremony was officiated by Council Treasurer Ms Imma Ling Kit-sum, President Professor John Lee Chi-Kin, Vice President (Academic) Professor May Cheng May-hung, and Vice President (Administration) Dr Tom Fong Wing-ho. Head of the Honours College Dr Li Wai-chin, Associate Heads of the Honours College, Professor Jiang Da and Dr Kevin Kam Wai-keung, professional mentors and supervisors, and members of the senior management also attended.
In his address, Professor Lee remarked: “The National 15th Five-Year Plan identifies education, technology, and talent as pivotal pillars of progress and innovation. Complementing this, the newly announced First Five-Year Plan for Economic and Social Development of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (2026-2030) sets a strategic direction to promote the integrated development of education, technology, and talent, positioning our city as an international hub for high-calibre talent. In alignment with this vision, our Honours College embodies EdUHK’s commitment to contributing to the Hong Kong SAR and nation’s transformation into a leading education powerhouse. I hope our Honours College students will be committed to pursue excellence, embrace challenges with resilience, learn with purpose, lead with integrity, and serve as role models for others.”
Seven distinguished leaders from the fields of sports, social service, innovation and technology, and business and finance have joined the Honours College as professional mentors for the 2026/27 cohort. They are:
- Ms Amy Chan Lim-chee – Headmistress of The Apprentice Jockeys’ School at The Hong Kong Jockey Club, former world champion and Olympic medallist in badminton, Honorary Fellow of EdUHK, and a steadfast champion of educational opportunities for athletes.
- Mr Cheng King-leung – Chairman of the Elite Sports Committee, and School Partnership Advisor for EdUHK with extensive experience in shaping physical education, youth development, and elite sports policy across Hong Kong and the Greater Bay Area.
- Ms Amy Fung Dun-mi – Chief Executive Officer of World Vision Hong Kong and a prominent social service leader dedicated to community care and social welfare.
- Mr Daniel Ho – Vice President of Unified Cyber Security and Digital Transformation Solutions at HGC Global Communications Limited, with over 20 years of ICT and telecommunications experience, continuously advancing cybersecurity capabilities.
- Mr Simon Lam Yat-tung – Co-Chief Executive Officer and Executive Board Director of China Pacific Life Insurance (H.K.) Company Limited, with over 25 years of senior management expertise in life insurance and reinsurance across Hong Kong and Southeast Asia.
- Mrs Annie Tse Yau On-yee – Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of TSL Jewellery (International) Limited, an advocate for retail sector evolution and contributor to government and industry advisory bodies.
- Mr Anderson Yu – Founder and Director of Gamenoodlesoup Limited, EdTech innovator and initiator of Cubic Community Lab, a social enterprise empowering digital natives to bridge physical and digital spaces.
Together with supervisors, EdUHK senior management, and attending guests, the professional mentors witnessed the students’ robing and formal induction at the ceremony. The students pledged to uphold professional ethics, dedication and responsibility; strive for excellence in their academic and personal development; and actively serve and contribute to the community.
Meanwhile, the inaugural cohort has recently returned from enriching summer exchanges in South Korea, the UK, and the US and the Chinese Mainland, as well as an internship programme in New Zealand. They pursued courses ranging from neuroanatomy and artificial intelligence to law and finance at prestigious institutions including Hanyang University, the University of California, Berkeley, University College London, and the University of Oxford. At Nanjing Normal University, students also took part in an AI-in-education immersion programme, exploring advanced technologies while exchanging ideas with local teachers and students.
Their learning extended well beyond the classroom. Some explored California’s natural history and ecosystems along the Berkeley shoreline, while another applied teaching approaches learned at EdUHK into practice at a primary school in New Zealand during an internship placement. Throughout these experiences, students immersed themselves in local cultures and engaged with peers from diverse cultural and academic backgrounds, broadening their perspectives and building connections with talented individuals from around the world.
Apart from global exposure, Honours College supervisors also engaged students in research and innovation projects, including evaluating the performance of an examination platform using AI tools. Students also had the opportunity to present an AI Toy Project to scholars at Hankuk University of Foreign Studies. Reflecting on these diverse experiences, students expressed their deep gratitude for the opportunities offered by the Honours College to explore their interests, expand their perspectives and realise their potential.
