EdUHK Climbs Over 600 Places in QS World University Rankings: Sustainability 2026 Entering Top 30% Globally

The Education University of Hong Kong (EdUHK) has achieved a remarkable leap in the QS World University Rankings: Sustainability 2026, announced today (18 November) by Quacquarelli Symonds (QS). EdUHK surged by more than 600 places to 571st out of 2,002 institutions worldwide, placing the University within the top 30% globally. In Asia, EdUHK now ranks 146th out of 827 institutions and stands seventh among 11 higher education institutions in Hong Kong.

Meanwhile, EdUHK’s also achieved a strong result in the Shanghai Ranking’s Global Ranking of Academic Subjects (GRAS) released today, placing ninth worldwide and second in HK in education. Each year, GRAS assesses around 2,000 universities across 57 subjects.

"Rising over 600 places globally reflects the dedication of our community in embedding the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) into every aspect of university life,” said Professor John Lee Chi-Kin, President of EdUHK and Chair in UNESCO Regional Education Development and Lifelong Learning. “I am delighted that, beyond the QS Sustainability Rankings which affirms our commitment to building a greener and more equitable future, EdUHK is also gaining increasing international recognition for our strengths in teacher education and innovative research."

This sustainability success is latest milestone in EdUHK’s upward trajectory across global rankings. In the QS World University Rankings: Asia 2026, the University advanced 60 positions to 152nd. In October, EdUHK made its debut in the Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings 2026 securing 195th worldwide and sixth in Hong Kong. As a university dedicated to teacher education, EdUHK has also exceled in discipline-specific rankings– rising eight places to 12th globally in Education in the QS World University Rankings by Subject 2025, and climbing three places to third worldwide in education and educational research in the U.S. News & World Report 2025–2026 Best Global Universities rankings.

The QS Sustainability Rankings evaluate institutions across three pillars – Environmental Impact, Social Impact and Governance. This progress is attributed to substantial gains in all three categories, highlighting EdUHK’s growing commitment to sustainability in education, research and operations. EdUHK showcased notable improvements in:

  • Environmental Research: Ranked 164th globally and 15th in Asia, reflecting high-impact outputs aligned with UN SDGs 7, 11–15.
  • Governance: Demonstrating a strengthened ethical culture, transparency and student representation.
  • Equality: Highlighting inclusive policies and outcomes.
  • Environmental Sustainability: Driven by enhanced campus operations and climate-action strategies.
